Module 15 Activity: Classifying Personality Disorders PSY101 Dr. Stewart Personality Related Disorders Personality Disorder: is a type of mental disorder in which one has a way of thinking, feeling, and behaving that differs from the expectations of the culture, causes distress or problems functioning, and lasts over a period of time. There are 10 specific types of personality disorders, which are grouped into three categories called “clusters”. A long-term pattern of behavior and inner experiences that differ significantly from what is expected is very common to all personality disorders. The patterns of experience and behaviors start during late adolescence or early adulthood, which causes distress or problems in functioning. If gone untreated, behavior and experience is fixed and long lasting. The behavioral patterns can be seen in at least two of the following areas: Ways of thinking about oneself or others Ways of responding emotionally Ways of relating to other people Ways of controlling one’s behavior Directions: Use the websites listed below to help you differentiate between the different types of personality disorders.
