LGBT Reflection 12/04/2021 LGBT Reflection Deanna King Addiction Counseling (105-400)
The following paper reflects what I have learned from the document, “Ending Conversion Therapy”. It is an inappropriate method that can have negative and destructive effects to the minor’s wellbeing and self-esteem. The sexual and gender minority youth face prejudice and hate from many institutions such as school, church, and society. Family acceptance is very important to the way a sexual and gender minority youth feels about themselves and has shown to have a positive effect on the youth. No research has shown that conversion therapy is effective and those counseling these youths should not use conversion therapy. It perpetuates outdated gender roles and destructive stereotypes that being a sexual or gender minority or identifying as LGBTQ is an abnormal part of human development. LGBT Reflection Paper
What did you learn from this document? What I learned from this document is that conversion therapy is a very negative approach to counseling sexual and gender minority groups. There is no research that shows that conversion therapy is effective, in fact it has shown to be devastating to some. I also learned that same gender and sexual orientation in gender identity and gender expression are a part of the normal range of human diversity. It does not mean there is a mental disorder. Interventions aimed at changing one’s gender or identity can have harmful consequences. I learned that the increased risks faced by sexual gender minority youth are not a function of their identity and the risks faced by them stem from the pressures of prejudice, discrimination, harassment, and violence. Sexual and gender minority youth will have better self-esteem, deal with stress better, and have a sense of wellbeing when their families are accepting of their sexual identity. Sexual and gender minority adolescents may hold multiple minority identities and have intersecting identities such as being African American, a woman, or have a disability. So essential they are dealing with the stress that comes from all parts of their identity. How can you incorporate the guidance provided to help you when you become a clinician (and in general)? I can incorporate the guidance provided to help me when I become a clinician by being accepting and compassionate. I will remember that everyone’s treatment plan will be different, and I need to focus on supporting the individual and helping them find resources. I need to assess the family and community systems in which the child lives as well as the individual issues. I need to focus on the client’s self-esteem and self-acceptance as well as developing a strong support system. While working with sexual and gender minorities it is important that they

are given the tools they need to develop coping skills so that they do not internalize the prejudice they may face in school, home, church, and society. It is important that when I counsel anyone that is a sexual or gender minority they need to be treated with respect and acceptance. I also think it is important to make sure they know that it ok to be who they are no matter what society and gender stereotype they face. Acceptance is important and the youths who have low acceptance suffer from depression, substance abuse, and mental health issues. It is important to be sensitive to what struggles they face and use communication skills to help them develop strong self-esteem and help them learn how to deal with the pressures they face in healthy, constructive ways. Which quote resonated most with you? The quote that resonated with me the most was “When I came out to my parents, they found me a conversion therapist who told me transgender people were sick and belonged in mental hospitals. He forced me to throw away all my girl’s clothes as part of my treatment but having to dress as a male sent me into complete despair, hopelessness, and depression. Thankfully, one of my friends recognized the warning signs and called social services, which intervened and got me the housing and medical care I needed. It is always darkest before the dawn, but I’m living proof that a smart bystander can save a life.” Why? This resonated with me because it shows the hate and prejudice that sexual and gender minority youth face from hateful people. It can be heart breaking. It is hard enough in life just to make it and be self-sufficient and mentally strong for minorities. These youths also must face tremendous discrimination from some on top of just trying to live their lives. If they have more acceptance, love, and understanding they become their true, healthy self. I am just glad there are people out there who will help them and understand what they are feeling. It is wonderful the
progress we have made when it comes to LGBT acceptance. My son is gay. He just came out to us last weekend; I support him and will always love him no matter what. Everyone, every human deserves respect and dignity, even if we don’t understand their struggles.
