Three ways we view Psychological Testing TECHNICAL (no straight forward way to measure human behavior), CONTROVERSIAL (tests can have biases that lead to lawsuits), IMPORTANT (tests lead to decisions about one's life; ex: Larry P. vs. Riles case) Three ways Psychological Testing is used to make decisions in people"s lives OCCUPATIONAL, CLINICAL, EDUCATIONAL What is a Test? A measurement device or technique used to quantify behavior or aid in the understanding and prediction of behavior. What is a Test Item? Specific stimulus to which a person responds overtly. Can be scored or evaluated. What is a Psychological Test? A measurement device that consists of items to measure overt and covert behaviors. Use of a Psychological Test Designed to measure human characteristics that pertain to behaviors. What are overt behaviors? Behaviors that can be observed. Ex: walking, talking, fighting What are covert behaviors? Behaviors that cannot be observed. Ex: thoughts, feelings What are the three characteristics of a Psychological Test? (components of assessment instruments) SAMPLE OF BEHAVIOR (protocol; tests comprised of sample of behavior of interest), STANDARD CONDITION (examiner's manual; tests are administered with uniformity across
administration), SCORING RULES (examiner's manual & technical manual; tests have rules for scoring that can be objective or subjective) Objective Two individuals scoring the same test arriving at the exact same score. Ex: multiple choice exam Subjective Two individuals scoring the exact same test arriving at similar results. Ex: constructed response exams, essay tests What are the three categories of a test? TEST PERFORMANCE (assesses what you can do), BEHAVIOR OBSERVATION (recording behavior), SELF-REPORT (reporting your own thoughts and feelings) What are the five areas of a test? INTELLECTUAL ABILITY TESTS (assesses intelligence and cognitive 'logical' abilities) APTITUDE TESTS (estimates potential to succeed in an activity requiring certain skills) ACHIEVEMENT TESTS (measures level of knowledge in a particular area) CAREER OR EMPLOYMENT INVENTORIES (assesses interests and helps classify those interests in terms of jobs and careers) PERSONALITY INVENTORIES (measures wide range of stable and unique personality traits, states, and attitudes, as well as emotional or psychological problems) What are the five types of tests? INDIVIDUAL TESTS (given to one person at a time) GROUP TESTS (given to more than one person at a time) ACHIEVEMENT TESTS (human ability test, assesses prior learning) APTITUDE TESTS (human ability test, evaluates potential for learning) INTELLIGENCE TESTS (human ability, tests for accuracy, speed, or both; Ex: Stanford Binet Intelligence Test) Personality Tests look at what? Overt and covert dispositions of an individual.
