A case where it would have been beneficial to employ resiliency theory The student in this discussion will be known as NS for privacy reasons. NS, age 16, was referred to my office by her art teacher, who noticed that NS had missed a significant amount of school. The teacher explained that when NS was present, she was distant, withdrawn, and lacked the motivation to get any work done, and when she did, it displayed vivid images of self-harm. Describe the presenting problem. NS had been sexually assaulted in school before the pandemic, so she had not been in school before the current school year; she felt that being in the school setting intensified her anxiety and depression, which led to her desire to self-harm. Describe an intervention you would implement to promote resiliency. I would implement the evidence-based approach of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to promote resiliency with NS. DBT serves as a means of bringing into focus the social and emotional aspects of a client's life and assisting clients to regulate their emotions by helping them cope with extreme or unstable emotions and harmful behaviors. It teaches clients that their emotions are valid and to accept who they are, regardless of the adversity they have experienced (Routledge, n.d.) . An instrument from Smith-Osborne and Whitehill Bolton’s article and why I chose it The instrument scale from Smith-Osborne and Whitehill Bolton's article that would be appropriate to determine how successful the intervention is at raising NS's level of resiliency is the Resilience Scale for Adolescents. This scale is a 28-item scale that evaluates the factors of Personal Competence (PC), Social Competence (SC), Structured Style (SS), Family Cohesion (FC), and Social Resources (SR) ( Assessing Resilience: A Review of Measures Across the Life Course: @ Walden University Library , n.d.). I chose this instrument for a client like NS because this assessment measures important factors that NS would encounter daily that can be used to build and increase her resiliency. The PC factor measures a person's self-worth, self-efficacy, and capacity to carry out daily tasks. The SC factor gauges their extraversion and ability to engage in positive peer interactions and conversations. The SS factor takes into account their capacity for planning and initiating routines. The FC factor includes the shared values and support they experience with their family. And lastly, the SR factor measures their ability to access outside support from friends and family (Kelly et al., 2016). I also chose this scale because it is available at no cost to NS and her family. Although the Smith-Osborne and Whitehill-Bolton article states that this scale is appropriate for adolescents ages 13 to 15, recent research has validated that this scale is acceptable for adolescents ages 12 to 18. This would support my efforts to provide intervention for NS's mental distress and to determine her resiliency levels' strengths and weaknesses.
