2 Roles of Heredity and Serotonin on Aggressive Behaviors Heredity and serotonin are influential factors in determining an individual's aggressive behavior. Heredity influences aggressive behaviors by providing traits through genes inherited from a person's parents (Carlson & Birkett, 2021). Some people are more prone to aggression due to the genes they inherit from their parents. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter found in the brain that affects many different aspects of the body, including aggression. It is important for regulating emotions, regulating stress, and calming an individual down (Carlson & Birkett, 2021). Serotonin levels can range from low to high, which is directly correlated with aggressive behavior, as low serotonin levels are associated with increased aggression. While heredity is responsible for the genetic tendencies that can lead to aggression, serotonin plays an important role in regulating emotions and stress. Therefore, it can be said that serotonin is more dominant than heredity, even though both have a significant influence on aggressive behavior. Role of Peptides Produced by Neurons in Control of Feeding and Metabolism Peptides produced by neurons in the hypothalamus are important regulators of feeding and metabolism. These peptides, such as ghrelin, leptin, and orexins, act on other neurons to modify their activity and ultimately regulate the homeostatic mechanisms implicated in metabolism and feeding (Carlson & Birkett, 2021). Ghrelin, for example, increases hunger and promotes fat storage in the body. In contrast, leptin acts to reduce hunger and decrease fat storage. Orexins are modulated more by environmental factors, such as light and stress, and work by activating other neurons to increase hunger and motivate foraging behavior. Thus, hormones
3 in the hypothalamus are key mediators in controlling both food intake and metabolic activity, helping to ensure that caloric and nutrient intake meets the organism's needs. Through their activity, these peptides promote a balanced and healthy metabolism and are vital to maintaining an organism's health. References Carlson, N. R., & Birkett, M. A. (2021).
