The hierarchical division of society is not limited to the rich and poor only but people are differentiated based on different criteria as well, gender being one of them. It is because of the patriarchal nature of society that men are given dominant positions and privileges while women are given low status and positions in society. This differentiation in society leads to the portrayal of both men and women in a particular way which is mostly stereotyped in nature. For example, men are given a muscular image while women are shown as emotional.
