Research information on a traumatic situation that has affected learner development and family involvement in education (ex: Sandy Hook, Columbine, 9/11, etc.) Develop a strategy that can support young children experiencing a traumatic situation. How can you support the social and emotional development of young children who are coming into your classroom? Amongst public schools in the United States, teachers, guidance counselors, administrators, and other school staff are responsive for student and school needs, including but not limited to student academic performance, school activities and events, trauma, and student mental and psychological health (Alexander, 2021). Trauma symptoms could appear as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and mood disorders (Alexander, 2021). Teachers should be proactive and responsive to students’ needs and create a feeling of safety in their classrooms. It is also essential for teachers to remain calm and maintain routines as much as possible (Ehmke, 2023). Educators should be aware of signs a student may be struggling or may need extra help. Teachers are expected to show genuine respect for students by providing kindness and empathize with challenges students may experience. It is important for adults to gain and maintain eye contact, validate the child’s feelings, provide appropriate physical affection, and communicate respect and transparency. Children’s development can further be supported by being provided a physically and emotionally safe environment. Being knowledgeable and respectful of students triggers and preparing for difficulties beforehand will be beneficial. Children should be given consequences rather than punishment when misbehaving.
