Billy Lacey “I hereby affirm that I have neither given nor received assistance on this exam, paper or assignment” Billy Lacey Hybrid ADHD Activity Step 1 Video Connections: Watch the videos listed below 1. ADHD Symptoms & Behaviors in Adults, ADHD in Adults https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzGQ4dkyl8U 2. Failing at Normal: An ADHD Success Story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiwZQNYlGQI Question: Provide 4-5 Sentences that highlight the challenges and subsequent success experienced by the individuals in the videos. Individuals with ADHD have many challenges and subsequent success experiences. Challenges with ADHD can relate to academics and personal life experiences. The individuals in the video describe ADHD as being behavior affected by the brain. The behaviors affected by the brain can affect academics, relationships with friends or making relationships, marriages, careers, and more. In the Failing at Normal video, Jessica McCabe states how her life was in shambles because she was not aware of what ADHD was. Being able to understand the meaning behind ADHD allowed her to open and create adjustments in life such as a timer to control her since of time, task list to ensure all things are being done, and implementing goals that are obtainable. Step 2 Activity: Go to the link: https://www.understood.org/en/articles/through-your-childs- eyes#Attention_challenges:_Videos_of_kids Once you are in the website for Through Your Child's Eyes, scroll down: Now, choose a grade that you are interested in exploring. You may come back and choose a different experience if you like; you can try different experiences and then choose the one you want for the assignment. After you decide on the grade, think about what struggle you would like to explore. You are welcome to explore and pick a few different videos. For your assignment, prepare to talk about the following information . See questions on the next page.
Billy Lacey “I hereby affirm that I have neither given nor received assistance on this exam, paper or assignment” Billy Lacey Share Child/Grade/Activity: Alex 6 th grade Math 1. Share three challenges your student discusses when presented with a task that they struggle in during school. When looking at a math problem all she sees is confusion Alex would get the math symbols / operation signs mixed up or even is not sure what they are called. Becoming overwhelmed and stressed which makes it hard to think. 2. Share three feelings you had while interacting with the simulator. Briefly discuss the reasoning behind those feelings. Sad – While watching the simulator it made me feel sad because math is complicated. As a special education teacher and a math resource teacher, I understand the content that is required to be successful with the curriculum being taught and it can be tough. Anxiety – As the student stated the anxiety that she had I was feeling the anxiety with her. I understand the complexity of the content which can be overwhelming for any student. Heartbreaking – This made my heartbreak as more direct assistance should be given to Alex to ensure that she is understanding and not overwhelmed when completing the math work. 3. While watching your student speak, you probably had some thoughts in your head. Did your views change about the child in the video after you tried the simulation? Share two of your views and how they changed or did not change. My view of Alex and other students speaking did not change much. ADHD is real. As a special education teacher, I have had the opportunity to work with several students diagnosed with ADHD. These students require support which includes small groups or 1:1 just like Alex during her recess working on her homework. Without these supports in place, students most likely will have a hard time focusing on assignments, teaching lectures from teachers, and monitoring time for the completion of assignments. 4. Do you have a new understanding for those with ADHD? Think and talk about strategies that a teacher may use to assist your student in order to perform better. 1a. Review Chapter 6 of the text list 5 barriers present for student with ADHD in the school/classroom environment and 5 strategies to address the barrier. Complete the table below, include page number citations from text. Barriers for Student with ADHD Strategies to Address Barriers

Provide 4-5 sentences and text page citations. There are many pros and cons of medication for a child with ADHD. Some that I can think of off the top of my mind is being able to focus on the classroom (pro) and negative side effects of the medication (con). According to the text, “Taking medication usually reduces significantly the amount of daydreaming or disruptive behaviors that students display.” ( Friend, 2018, Pg. 182). Being able to focus on instruction and decrease daydreaming and/or destructive behaviors is a benefit or pro to taking medication for ADHD. According to the text, “Some parents also have expressed concern about the side effects of medication (e.g., loss of appetite) and the potential for later substance abuse.” ( Friend,

Supports that could be in place to assist adults with ADHD are as follows: o Task list o Timers o Alarm clocks o Co-worker reminders o Co-worker collaboration / PLC assistance Reference Friend, M.
