Name: Billy Lacey Honor Code: “I hereby affirm that I have neither given nor received help on this assignment.” Billy Lacey C ASE S TUDY : “T HE ART BOX Directions : 1) Read the case study “The Art Box” located on Brightspace. 2) Read and Reflect upon the questions. 3) Answer each question based upon your experiences and what you have learned in this course within our text and PP lessons. 4) Questions 1, 3-6 will be worth one point each. Questions 2 and 8 will be worth 2 points each. 5) Scoring Tool is included at the end of the document. Questions for The Art Box : 1) From the perspective of Kohlberg’s theory of moral development, how might you characterize Anne’s behavior? Why do you believe Anne is at this stage? Provide examples and elaborate to support your 1 paragraph response. (1pt) Kohlberg’s theory of moral development has three levels of development. Anne’s behavior is relatively resembling level one which is preconventional morality. Preconventional morality states that rules imposed by authority figures are conformed to avoid punishment. Anne’s behavior is significantly different in school compared to the behavior at home. In the case study “The Art Box”, Anne was caught with art supplies that belonged to her peers and stated that her sister’s name is Lilly. During the parent conference scheduled by Mr. King with Mr. and Ms. Walker, Anne changed her story and stated that her peers gave her the supplies so she would be their friend. In this situation, Anne told Mr. King the supplies belonged to her to avoid consequences at school and told her dad and mom that she was given the supplies to avoid consequences at home. 2) Why do you think Anne stole the items? Take a deep dive into all the individuals, their behavior and/or circumstances surrounding the case. In other words, go below the surface level and examine the case from many levels. Provide examples and elaborate to support your 1-2 paragraph response. (2pts) As a teacher myself, my personal belief is that Anne needed school supplies. Anne may have misplaced her supplies, broken her supplies, or were never given adequate supplies for art class. According to the case study, Mr. Walker was impolite with Mr. King by ignoring his outstretched hand. Mr. Walker also stated, “I had to cancel several clients at the office to come to this meeting.” In accordance with the above statement, Mr. Walker was annoyed that he had to take time from his busy work schedule to deal with a parent conference. If Mr. Walker is intensely committed to his work life, he may not be committed to his home life and having available time to purchase supplies or take Anne school shopping.
Name: Billy Lacey Honor Code: “I hereby affirm that I have neither given nor received help on this assignment.” Billy Lacey Anne may have stolen the item because she is usure of the difference between right and wrong. Anne has an understanding that her dad and mom, Mr. and Ms. Walker will believe her due to obeying and listening at home. In the case study it states, “There you have it, Mr. King. My daughter knows I expect her to obey rules like not stealing and lying. Don’t you, Anne?” and “If she says the other kids gave them to her, then they gave them to her.” According to this statement Anne would have the support of avoiding conflict which meant that her only solution would be to get her school supplies on her own. 3) Because Anne has essentially been reinforced for stealing (i.e. she has obtained desirable items without negative repercussions) she is apt to steal again. As the teacher, what four (4) proactive actions might you do or put into place to prevent other thefts from occurring in this classroom. Bullet your responses. (1pt) Label all students supplies with a permanent mark like what Lilly’s father did. Create a location within the classroom for the supplies. This will ensure that all student supplies are in a location visible to the human eye. Ask parents to donate extra supplies at the beginning of the school year. This will prevent new supplies being purchased during the year and students will have supplies for class. Have a learning experience with social skills. Students will learn why it is important not to take other peers or adults’ items that don’t belong to them without asking. 4) Developmental Researchers believe that parents display different styles (i.e., authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved) for rearing their children. Discuss : What type of parenting style does Mr. Walker exhibit? What type of parenting style does Mrs. Walker ? Provide examples and elaborate to support your response (1pt) Parenting styles that Mr. Walker exhibit authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved. I feel that Mr. Walker exhibits three of the parenting styles because he has strict rules at home regarding being honest, not lying, and not stealing. Mr. Walker also set rules but very rarely enforces them and is uninvolved due to the frustration level that Mr. Walker exhibits from leaving work early. Ms. Walker exhibits an uninvolved and permissive parenting style. Ms. Walker did not communicate during the parent conference and according to the case student, “Ms. Walker reaches out and pulls her daughter towards her in a protective embrace.” 5) Mr. King (the teacher) makes a common mistake: His first contact of the school year with the Walkers is a negative one. As a teacher, Name at least four (4) ways you will initiate more positive initial contacts with students’ parents? Bullet your responses. (1pt) Make an initial correspondence with the parents introducing yourself.
Name: Billy Lacey Honor Code: “I hereby affirm that I have neither given nor received help on this assignment.” Billy Lacey Instead of negative contact, create a contact about concern. For example, I have noticed that Anne is using other students’ art supplies. Can you please ensure that Anne has adequate supplies for art to be successful during the school year. Send home communication and praise on the first successful project and give words of encouragement especially for students of needs. Use a communication program such as Class Dojo to stay in touch with parents through the academic school year. This will make the parents feel involved in their child’s schooling. 6) The parent conference did not go well. What things might Mr. King have done to make the parent conference go more smoothly? Think of five (5) ways/actions to conduct a more positive productive conference with the parents of the case. Bullet your responses (1pt) Start a parent conference with at least 3 positives for every 1 negative. Schedule a conference time that is beneficial to the parents and not just the teacher. Use good-bad-good to balance out negatives and positives. Keep the conference smooth and avoid frustration on both sides, the parents and teacher. Ensure the use of the 5 R’s - respect, responsiveness and reassurance, relationship, reciprocity, and reflection. 7) Based on this case: What five (5) positive prosocial behaviors do you want Anne to exhibit in the classroom? Name in positive observable terms the behavior you want Anne to exhibit. Bullet your Responses (1pt) (For example: Anne will raise her hand., Anne will use school appropriate language., Anne will arrive to school on time.) Anne will communicate with the teacher regarding school supplies. Anne will ask peers to share supplies. Anne will come to class prepared with supplies. Anne will interact with peers in an appropriate manner. Anne will respect peers and their property. 8) In the chart below : Describe at least three (3) specific strategies Mr. King might use to help Anne acquire and abide by internal standards for moral behavior? In other words: What would I do in the classroom to promote and increase Anne’s moral development and positive prosocial behavior? After describing the strategy, elaborate on why you believe the strategy will produce positive results with Anne based on what you know from this case. (2pts) Describe specific strategies to increase Why do you believe the strategy will
