For each of the scenarios below, discuss two different causality issues that the researchers should have considered in their study. These causality issues could be reverse causality, suppressing variables, anteceding variables, or intervening variables. It’s fine if both of your factors are the same type (e.g. two anteceding variables). It’s also possible to use one factor and explain how it could possibly work in two different ways (for instance, a variable could either be an anteceding or intervening variable). For each of the two factors: Draw a diagram showing your predicted relationships and explain your reasoning Identify what type of causality issue this is Discuss briefly how you think taking this issue into account would likely affect the results and the interpretation of the results. 1. A study has found that adults who say that they suffered from chronic ear-aches as a child are more likely to be obese as adults. 2. A study of 38,000 women in Iowa found a higher risk of dying among older women who used multivitamins compared with women who did not. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/11/more-evidence-against-vitamin-use 3. A study found that people who reported fewer hours of sleep per night were more likely to develop heart disease five years later than those who got more sleep. 4. A study shows that individuals who grow up closer to a university campus are more likely to go to university themselves.
