Bonus point aba modulo 6 Time out procedure . I am working with 7 kids with autism. All of them are in kindergarten. One child has a habit of quickly moving his bottle of juice from side to side after drinking all the juice as an indication that more juice is needed. This sound is very unpleasant, the BCBA has not designed any plan to deal with this behavior, because she considers that although it is very annoying, is not a priority according to the needs of the child, but I noticed the noise influences the other students behaviors, since it does not let them listen to the songs or watch the cartoon that the teacher plays during their break resulting in loss of concentration of the other students. After reading about Time-Out I think that we can apply this treatment to this behavior. Nonexclusion Time-Out -Planned Ignoring: We will remove all attention (verbal or visual contact) when the child begins to make these movements with the bottle.
As soon as the bottle’s movement and sound stop, we will resume contact and reinforce the alternative behavior, (could be ask for more juice): “more” in sign language. The child performs this behavior only when he is in a snack and lunch times. We can be implemented Time -out during snack time between 3 and 5 minutes from the total period of snack (20 min). Due to the student is non-verbal, we could explain the procedure using an history, with explicit images about the consequences of doing the behavior. Even when Planning Ignoring is a form of punishment, it is not one of the most aggressive ones. We must consider the ethical factors before applying it. In the same way, we cannot forget that we "ignore" only the behavior, never the student.
