Kayla W. Child Development 4 2/5/2023 Nature vs nurture is a very big argument that individuals have had for centuries. The reason why is that half of the nation feels as though nature is responsible for all genetics. Others feel as though nurture is the cause. To get into depth we’ll start with nature. Nature consists of the genetic compounds that a person inherits from their parents. An example would be a child getting their eye color from dad; and hair color from mom. Nurture typically refers to your experience. A great example would be abuse, loving parents etc. The idea is that the things that you've been through tend to make or break you. Looking into behavioral theories, it is believed that our personality is a result of the interactions, we have in our environment. On the other hand, biological theories suggest that personality is largely inherited. While many others argue that it is both your environment and genetics are both large factors in development. Mental illness is a really big factor that goes into mental development as well. A lot of individuals tend to argue that nature vs nurture can be the cause of these issues. Logically, you'd conclude that nature is the cause. Genetics is very strong so if both of your parents struggle with bipolar disorder; it is more likely for that offspring to come out with bipolar disorder. While yes, environmental issues can be the cause of mental disorders as well. For
example, if your environment is bad, you're more likely to come out bad. PTSD is a very real thing. If you've been in environments with constant abuse, turmoil, etc you'll develop disorders such as PTSD/Stockholm syndrome, etc. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a very big cause of mental disorders as well that many people overlook. Treatment can have a very big helpful effect. The kicker is, nature vs nurture can have an impact on this as well. The reason why I say that is because of looking at the nurture side. If you grow up in an environment where mental health is not talked about, you'll ignore your mental health. Therapy as well; if you grew up where therapy wasn't supported, you won't feel comfortable getting therapy. Treatment is a factor as well. If your genetic makeup consists of you counteracting to medical treatment, that can be an issue as well. The big discussion is usually nature vs nurture. Now with simple facts and choosing no sides, they coincide. Without nurture there, won't be nature, etc. It's the cycle of life. I feel as though if we take the time to notice; we need one for the other. This was a very great topic to go over because its no need to pick a side.
