Perez !0/27/2023 2-1 Discussion: Theory and Criminal Assessment For the final project assignment, I chose a scenario involving cybercrime, precisely a case of identity theft. Consequently, I selected a similar case from the FBI's Most Wanted list involving a suspect named John Doe, who was wanted for involvement in a significant cybercrime ring. Comparatively, both cases involve using advanced technology to steal personal information, leading to financial loss for the victims. However, they differ in terms of scale and severity. In the scenario I selected for the final project, the crime was isolated and affected a limited number of individuals. In contrast, John Doe's case, as highlighted by the FBI, involves a massive cybercrime ring targeting thousands of unsuspecting individuals, causing severe financial harm, which signifies a more extensive scale operation. From the perspective of the learning theory, it's plausible that these criminals have learned and adapted their techniques based on their interaction with the cyber environment, success from previous exploits, or even learning from others within the cybercrime community. When comparing crime scenes, there's a lack of physical crime scenes in cybercrimes. However, the "virtual" crime scenes, in this case, are intriguingly similar. Both involve invading personal online
spaces (emails, online bank accounts, etc.). These similarities suggest learning theory could provide valuable insight, as it could indicate that cybercriminals are learning from each other's techniques, adapting, and then applying those methods to their criminal activities.
