Discussion 2-1: Development of the Social Self Jessica Flanagan SNHU PSY 355 A. Bijaou 10/27/2023
Development of the Social Self Upon reviewing the content of "A Class Divided" and "Social Development: Crash Course Sociology #13", it becomes evident that children are not immune to the attitudes and behaviors of other group members. This is clearly demonstrated in how quickly the children in "A Class Divided" begin to internalize and then express discriminatory attitudes based on eye color, a trivial physical characteristic. This suggests the powerful influence of social context on children's developing attitudes and behaviors. Developmental milestones also significantly influence social development in childhood, shaping the child's self-concept, understanding of social roles, and ability to engage in pro-social behaviors. For instance, the development of empathy, which typically emerges around age two, can play a crucial role in promoting social understanding and reduced antisocial behaviors. Addressing antisocial behavior in adulthood, while impaired socialization in childhood may contribute, it should not be seen as the sole factor. Other elements, such as genetic predispositions, environmental factors, and individual personality traits, may also play a significant role. Thus, interventions may need to be multifaceted, including remediation of social skills, mental health support, and potentially behavioral interventions. In terms of fostering tolerance and inclusiveness, it is indeed possible to do so even in a societal context of intolerance. However, it requires deliberate effort, such as fostering open dialogues about differences and providing positive experiences with diverse groups. If the children in "A Class Divided" had not experienced the follow-up class, they might have carried forward harmful stereotypes without challenge, underscoring the importance of ongoing social education. The concept of development of the social self intersects with many of our programmatic course themes. For example, understanding one's social self is a foundational aspect of emotional intelligence
and can also inform our approach to self-care by helping us understand how our social interactions influence our well-being. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and perspectives on this important topic. References : 1. A Class Divided. (n.d.). Retrieved from ... a. CrashCourse. (2017, May 22).
