Erica Handy We Are Family 1 Chapter 4, Case Study 4.2: We Are Family Erica R. Handy Department of Psychology, Liberty University
Erica Handy We Are Family 2 Chapter 4 Case Study 4.2: We are Family 1. Marianne and Besty do indeed have different leadership styles. What style would you ascribe to Betsy? To Marianne? The style that I would ascribe to Besty is a task behavior leadership style. Besty wants to jump right in and get the job done. This to me is a very strong first approach because it will cause conflict because Besty has not created any kind of meetings or talks to get to personally know her team members. Moreover, her meetings to discuss the new communications plan feels pushy as she gives the team members goals and directives to demand change. However, she does show some good leadership qualities by asking her team members for advice and ideas to make it better, but she does not seem to want to build any type of relationship outside of completing the task at hand. At this point, Besty disregards their feelings and only wants the form of communication with her team members to be about following her instructions and completing the task that they are given on the work assignment which implements that she is task-oriented driven. On the other hand, Marianne shows a more relationship behavior leadership style that includes building relationships with her team members. Although to me this is the better approach, I do feel that it should not be used to hurt or disregard leadership. Marianne is taking the team members out for mentor meeting lunches allowing them to talk about Betsy and she is evening going back to Betsy telling her to lighten up, which suggests that she is siding with the team members against Betsy. The team members are not changing their ways and they are using Marianne to belittle Betsy’s leadership. The
Erica Handy We Are Family 3 team members have such a strong family-oriented relationship with Marianne that she judges Betsy as being bossy. Marianne is more concerned about mentoring her employees through relationships to motivate them rather than task completing which implements that she is relationship-oriented driven. 2. Does Betsy need to change her leadership style to improve the situation with Bridget and Suzanne? Does Marianne need to change style of Leadership? Yes, Betsy needs to change her leadership style because she will not gain any respect from Bridget and Suzanne because she will be seen as a manager who micromanages them possessing a controlling and demanding boss. Also, her style of leadership is seen as authority- compliance leadership which Northouse (2022), states that it places heavy emphasis on task and job requirements but less emphasis on people, except seeing people as tools to getting the job done (Northouse, 2022). Betsy’s approach can push employees to not be creative and lack communication of trying to find a way of working together. Although Betsy was hired to bring an aggressive plan to reenergize the school’s marketing and communication efforts, she does not have to be so aggressive to her team members to get them to bow down to her leadership approach. Likewise, Marianne needs to change her leadership style also because obviously she needs some help with completing an aggressive marketing communications plan for the school being that she had to hire Betsy. Marianne’s leadership approach does not suggest that she is concerned with the task at hand. Marianne seems to enjoy the lunch buddy meetings of building relationships. The problem is concerning because although she tells the team members to go to Betsy to resolve issues and that she is their boss, the team members are not respecting Betsy

Erica Handy We Are Family 4 because they are using Marianne as a scapegoat to not follow her directives. Marianne should not be causing division between leadership because it will start judgement between leaders. Northouse (2022) Marianne told Betsy, the problem existed because they have very different leadership styles in which she likes to empower people and that Betsy likes to boss them around (Northouse, 2022). Marianne is allowing her personal feelings about the team members to interfere with the goal of completing the task at hand. She hired Betsy to do a job therefore she should not take that away from her by showing favoritism towards the team members. 3. How can Marianne and Betsy work together? Marianne and Betsy can work together by bringing both of their leadership styles together. It is good to build healthy relationships, but it needs to be some guidelines and boundaries set so that team members do not feel or act in ways of not respecting anybody in leadership over them. Betsy should have gotten to know the team members better and Marianne should have let the team members know too that change is needed to see the bigger picture of the school’s task for the marketing communication plan. Marianne and Betsy should hold meetings together to bring about changes, goals, and expectations so that they can be seen on the same level of platform. Earlier in the case study, Northouse (2022) mentioned that Betsy and Marianne seemed in perfect sync with the direction that they believed was right for the college’s program (Northouse, 2022). So, Marianne must have been ok with Betsy’s new development communication plan. Furthermore, Marianne can also help Betsy by having her join in on the lunch mentor meetings so that she too can personally start to get to know her team members better. I think that when the team members see that both leaders are engaged with both styles of leadership task-oriented and relationship-oriented, they will begin to respect Betsy as their boss. Marianne must also learn to
Erica Handy We Are Family 5 shut down any discussion regarding leadership so that team members will not make any effort to try to play leaders against one another.
