PSY 355 Module One Milestone Template Jessica Flanagan Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Part One In 3 to 5 sentences for each rubric criterion, apply the conceptual foundations of motivation orientation to your lived experience by responding to the following: Describe which motivation orientation , autonomous or controlled , is most relevant to you and why. I personally identify more with an autonomous motivation orientation. This approach aligns with my intrinsic desire to pursue tasks and activities that I find inherently interesting and fulfilling. It promotes self-determination, allowing me to choose the activities I engage in based on my personal interests and values. This intrinsic motivation has a greater tendency to foster resilience, long-term commitment, and a deeper understanding of the tasks at hand, making it a motivating force in my personal and professional life. Describe how motivation orientation influences level of engagement . Motivation orientation significantly influences the level of engagement in any given task or activity. When an individual aligns with an autonomous motivation orientation, they tend to be more internally motivated and thus show higher levels of engagement. This is because they pursue tasks not for external rewards or recognition, but because they find them inherently fulfilling or interesting. This intrinsic motivation leads to a more profound connection with the work, prompting a stronger commitment and a desire to understand it on a deeper level. Consequently, their engagement tends to be more persistent and resilient, often leading to superior outcomes in both personal and professional spheres. Describe an authentic example of how conformity has been both detrimental and essential to your well-being. Conformity has had a dual impact on my well-being. On one hand, it has proven detrimental when it compromised my individuality. For instance, as a teenager, I succumbed to peer pressure and conformed to my friends' interest in extreme sports. Despite my fear and disinterest, I forced myself to partake in these activities to fit in, subsequently leading to undue stress and anxiety, negatively affecting my mental health. On the other hand, conformity has also been essential to my well-being in various social contexts, facilitating smoother interactions and mutual understanding. During my first job, I had to conform to the organization's culture, which meant adhering to rules and norms that differed from my accustomed practices. While initially challenging, this conformity eventually helped me integrate into the team, understand their work ethics, and foster productive working relationships. This positive social engagement significantly contributed to my overall well-being. Describe the strengths and limitations of an autonomously motivated mindset as it applies to emotional intelligence. An autonomously motivated mindset exhibits several strengths when applied to emotional intelligence. Such an individual possesses a heightened self-awareness and is driven by internal values and goals, leading to more significant self-control and emotional regulation. They tend to have a better understanding of their emotional reactions, thereby responding more effectively in various situations. This can foster healthier interpersonal relationships, as they often exhibit empathy and consider others' feelings.
However, there are limitations to an autonomously motivated mindset when it relates to emotional intelligence. It can lead to an over-reliance on self, potentially impeding the ability to ask for help or lean on others for support, which is essential in maintaining emotional well- being. Furthermore, high levels of autonomy might also result in an overemphasis on personal goals, potentially overshadowing empathy and understanding for others' emotions and perspectives. This could potentially lead to strained relations in both personal and professional spheres. Part Two Next, in 3 to 5 sentences for each criterion, describe the practical applications of motivation orientation within the leadership context by responding to the following: Describe the types of values that you believe would help to promote an autonomously motivated mindset in those you serve. Promoting an autonomously motivated mindset in those I serve requires cultivating certain foundational values. Integrity is paramount, as it encourages individuals to align their actions with their personal beliefs, fostering a sense of purpose and autonomy. Resilience is another important value that can help individuals navigate challenges and bounce back from setbacks, fostering self-reliance and self-motivation. Empathy, essential for developing emotional intelligence, assists in understanding and considering the perspectives of others. Self-reflection enables individuals to evaluate their actions and emotions, empowering them to take ownership of their growth. Lastly, promoting the value of collaboration can help balance the autonomy with a sense of community, encouraging individuals to seek support and engage with others constructively. Describe how you could support others in their own motivation . Supporting others in their motivation involves an understanding of their goals, motivations, and challenges. As a mentor, I can provide guidance, feedback and a listening ear. I'll promote the concept of growth mindset, encouraging them to view challenges as opportunities for learning rather than obstacles. Regular discussions about their progress, appreciating their efforts and celebrating their successes can bolster their confidence and enthusiasm. I'll also provide constructive feedback, helping them to continuously improve and encouraging them to see setbacks as part of the journey to success. Providing resources, tools, or connections that may aid them in their endeavors can also contribute to their motivation. Lastly, fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding, where they feel valued and heard, can greatly enhance their intrinsic motivation. Describe an example of how your understanding of motivation orientation can help you engage in more compassionate, empathetic leadership. My understanding of motivation orientation has the potential to significantly improve my leadership approach, particularly in terms of empathy and compassion. For instance, if I lead a team member who is primarily driven by achievement, they might thrive on challenging tasks and ambitious goals. Recognizing this, I can structure their workload in a way that provides them with opportunities for growth, simultaneously demonstrating my understanding of their motivations and showing empathy for their desire to excel. Conversely, if a team member is driven more by affiliation, they may value a harmonious work environment and strong interpersonal relationships. In this case, my role as a leader would include fostering a supportive, collaborative team environment. Through this, I not only acknowledge their motivation orientation but also show compassion in creating an environment where they can thrive. This, in turn, can lead to increased job satisfaction and productivity, showing the direct benefits of understanding motivation orientation in leadership.
