PSY 310 Journal 1-2 Topic Selection: Serial Murderer Jessica Flanagan I have chosen the case of the serial murderer, explicitly focusing on the infamous Aileen Wuornos. The crime represented in this scenario is a series of murders, which falls under the category of violent crime and, more specifically, serial killings. These crimes were committed by Wuornos over about a year from 1989 to 1990, during which she shot and killed seven men along various Florida highways. Wuornos's motivation for committing these heinous crimes stems from personal and situational factors. Born into a deeply dysfunctional family, Wuornos was exposed to physical and sexual abuse from a young age, experiences that likely contributed to developing her violent tendencies. As an adult, Wuornos was primarily marginalized by society and resorted to sex work for survival, which probably put her in high-risk situations and may have reinforced her vulnerability and feelings of anger and resentment. The turning point, however, appears to have been her relationship with Tyria Moore. Their volatile romance seems to have been a catalyst for escalating Wuornos's violent tendencies into homicidal actions. Wuornos claimed she killed these men in self-defense, asserting they had attempted to rape her during their encounters. However, given the serial nature of these killings and the lack of convincing evidence to support her claims, it is probable that her motivations may have been more complex, tied to a mixture of perceived threats, revenge against men, and perhaps even a twisted sense of justice. In the case of Richard Mallory, Wuornos's first victim, she argued that he had assaulted and raped her, prompting her to kill him in self-defense. Mallory did have a previous record of sexual assault, which lends some credence to Wuornos's claim. However, this defense was insufficient to save her from a death penalty conviction for Mallory's murder, nor did it excuse her subsequent murders. Ultimately, Wuornos's life story and crime spree provide a chilling example of how severe psychosocial trauma can potentially lead to violent criminal behavior. Overall, I chose to focus on Aileen Wuornos as she represents a complex and intriguing case of serial murder. Her history of early childhood trauma, mental health issues, and societal marginalization raises essential questions about the root causes of violent crimes and how they can be prevented. Additionally, her claims of self-defense and targeting men in her killings bring up discussions about gender and power dynamics in serial murder and the need for more comprehensive support systems for individuals who have experienced trauma. From a criminal standpoint, Wuornos's actions can be classified as first-degree murder. This means that she deliberately and premeditatedly took the lives of her victims. However, her motivations may also fall under elements of second-degree murder, such as acting out of revenge or anger. For example, in the case of David Spears, Wuornos claimed that he had mocked and assaulted her, leading to
her decision to kill him. This suggests a potential mix of premeditation and emotion-driven actions in her murders. In conclusion, while it is impossible to definitively determine Aileen Wuornos's exact motivations for her heinous crimes, her case raises essential discussions about the impact of trauma and societal issues on criminal behavior. It also serves as a reminder of the need for effective prevention and support systems to address these root causes and potentially prevent future cases like hers. References 1.
