1-2 Short Paper: Living with Disabilities in the United States: From Segregation to Integration Hailey Hanson Psy-230
I believe, after watching the video and my own experience, that people with disabilities were often marginalized due to a lack of understanding and empathy. One factor is the level of societal knowledge and expertise about disabilities. In the past, this lack of awareness led to misconceptions and stigma, often resulting in the exclusion and mistreatment of those with disabilities. The video "Lost in Laconia" shows this point by mentioning the historical practices of segregation and institutionalization. In the past few decades, there has been a shift in this perspective. This change can be attributed to several factors, including a better understanding of disabilities, advocacy by disabled individuals and their allies, and legal protections such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These developments have led to more inclusive attitudes and improved access to service. I think although there has been progress, there are still challenges that remain. For example, discrimination and accessibility issues exist in different forms. One major challenge is ensuring genuine inclusivity in schools and service systems. As shown in "Lost in Laconia," schools and service providers must not only accommodate disabilities physically but also nurture an environment of understanding and respect for diversity. This includes training educators to support students with disabilities effectively and ensuring inclusive policies. In conclusion, while attitudes and treatments have evolved, I think there is still a long journey toward full acceptance and equality for individuals with disabilities is ongoing. Implementing systems like continuous advocacy, education, and policy reform are essential in addressing the existing challenges .
