2-2 Short Paper: Design a Health Plan Hailey y. Hanson Psy-225: Health Psychology Southern New Hampshire University Professor Tsahiridis
Health Plan My beloved Grandpa M, a lifelong truck driver, has recently been grappling with severe medical issues. His journey is marked by past substance use in his youth and a battle with lung cancer last year. Now, he faces another daunting challenge the discovery of cancer in his bladder. This alarming situation has propelled me to focus on two critical aspects of his lifestyle, diet and mental outlook. A diet high in sugar may fuel cancer growth, and Grandpa M's penchant for sugary treats and excessive seasoning raises concern (Taylor & Stanton, 2021). His obstinate nature and skepticism towards spirituality further complicate his path to recovery. I am determined to devise a comprehensive health plan that addresses these issues head-on, promoting a holistic approach to his well-being. The cornerstone of this health plan is a diet transformation, emphasizing organic and nutrient-rich foods while reducing sugar and excessive salt intake. The significance of diet in managing health conditions, with specific dietary patterns linked to improved outcomes in cancer patients (Taylor & Stanton, 2021). I also aim to introduce Grandpa M to tailored therapy sessions. These sessions will address his stubborn attitude, potentially opening him to new perspectives on health and treatment and explo ring spirituality’s healing aspects in a respectful, educational manner. The psychological benefits of spirituality and therapy, such as enhanced coping mechanisms and improved mental well-being, are well-documented and could be pivotal in Grandpa M's journey (Taylor & Stanton, 2021). I also plan on integrating mild physical activity into Grandpa M's routine, considering his age and physical condition, which is a factor. Regular, gentle exercise can bolster physical health, improve mood, and foster a sense of well- being, which is crucial for combating cancer’s physical and emotional toll (Taylor & Stanton, 2021). I plan to employ behavior-change strategies, including cognitive-behavioral therapy
(CBT) to reshape Grandpa M's attitudes and beliefs towards health, self-monitoring to foster self-awareness regarding his lifestyle choices, and social support to ensure he feels backed and understood throughout this journey. Addressing potential stumbling blocks is imperative. Should resistance or setbacks arise, immediate, open communication and adaptive strategies will be essential. One important thing is to keep encouraging Grandpa M to verbalize his challenges, and adapting the plan accordingly will be vital in maintaining his motivation and preventing relapse. Success in this health plan will be measured by physical improvements, Grandpa M's enhanced quality of life, and a newfound openness to lifestyle changes that support his well-being.
