RUNNING HEAD: DIAGNOSING 1 223029470841 ROLE OF DIAGNOSING ALKESHIAH AVERY PSY 6102
PSYCHOPATHOLOGY 2 Diagnosis is simply to recognize and identify the nature of a disorder or illness by examining it. It can also be the process of identifying or determining the nature and cause of a disorder, disease or injury through evaluation. Diagnosing individual comes with many benefits. In the healthcare arena professional diagnose patients so that a plan for recovery can occur so that it would attempt to get id of or alleviate the issue. Diagnosing is not just done in the professional medical healthcare field it can also be used in other areas such as mechanics, lawncare, and other things. The main objective for diagnosing it to identify the problem and then offer solutions to it. In the mental therapist setting providing diagnosis is essential. One of the main reasons for treatment purposes is to offer "A proper diagnosis so that it will help clinicians implement effective interventions that is geared towards offering improved clinical outcomes" (Buckley, 2014, p. 160). A diagnosis identifies the illness so that the professional will be able to use interventions to best help the patient recover. Therapists provide a diagnosis so that it can create communication and to help patients understand their condition. When a professional informs someone about their diagnoses it can offer relief and may make the client feel that they have support and are not alone. Diagnosing offers a way to conceptualize which treatments may be best. Providing a diagnosis can also provide the patient with resources and can provide professionals a way to communicate and properly inform the client about their condition. A diagnosis helps professionals to communicate clinical information to other practitioners and health care systems administrators (Buckley, 2014) DSM- 5 has the most up-to-date criteria for diagnosing mental disorders, along with extensive descriptive text, providing a common language for clinicians to communicate about their patients. The DSM-5 has many benefits however there are some limitations. The limitations of
PSYCHOPATHOLOGY 3 the DSM and diagnosis are its reliability. Field trials have also showed that the DSM-5 has poor reliability (Frances, 2014). “Reliability in this case means that the same or compatible results will be derived in different clinical experiments. Based on the lack of scientific validity and reliability for the DSM-5, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) largely abandoned the DSM for research purposes in 2013 because it held it does not lead to useful research” (Guterman,2018) Another limitation is that the DSM view mental illness from a pathology perspective, which means that the DSM-5 only uses diagnosis from a medical standpoint, how symptoms are seen based on psychiatry. It does not acknowledge any other “views from other mental health professional outside of psychiatry" (Petrovich & Garcia, 2015, p. 37). How does diversity impact symptoms and diagnosis? Diversity is not amongst the diagnosis categories. Diagnosing is normally done by stereotypes. Most of the books on mental health diagnosing is catered towards Caucasians. It may be because they are the majority. There is a lack of diversity literature on diagnosing. It affects the interpretations of symptoms and how the patient is received by professionals (Petrovich, 2015). Professionals should know the cultural difference between themselves and the client and understand culture may show symptoms differently. Professionals should also understand the problem from the client’s perspective and allow the client to describe illnesses in a way that can be understood by the professional that can assist with proper diagnosing (Petrovich, 2015) Positive psychology is a branch of psychology focused on the character strengths and behaviors that allow individuals to build a life of meaning and purpose.

PSYCHOPATHOLOGY 4 Ensuring the client that the strengths they have outweigh any weaknesses and that in order to get to see a rainbow you must see the rain. I will focus on separating the clients from their problems so that their strengths are always on the forefront. I will also have the client focus on the positive aspects of their life.
