Student Name: Tiffany L. Burns What are some specific unhelpful thoughts that Mr. Alvarez is having? Mr. Alverez has been very negative about himself as a man and provider. he is fixated on the notion that in order to be considered a man he has to have a job, make money, and be the provider. Mr. Alverez is having unhelpful thoughts about therapy right from the start of the sessions that he is not overly optimistic that it will be useful Mr. Alverez allows his cultural beliefs guide his thoughts while his culture is a strength in his life, but in this situation his cultural beliefs as having a negative impact. What types of unhelpful thinking patterns is he falling into: Mr. Alverez has been having labeling thoughts he has statements/thoughts such as: “A good man is a provider —I am not a provider,” “I have let my family down—I am useless” and “A man should provide for his family”; “If a man does not provide for his family, then he is not a man”; and “If I provide for my family I will be respected by others.” Mr. Alverez has also been having overgeneralization thoughts in his interviewing process has explained the process as “tough” when questioned how an interview went. Additionally, Mr. Alverez is not optimistic about therapy sessions, but has said “I owe it to my family to give this a try….. maybe this is in my head…I don’t know”. What CBT (cognitive) strategies would you use with Mr. Alvarez? When I first started considering what CBT strategies to use with I really wanted to utilize coping card . However, after really looking into it and reading about the ideas of treatment I felt that Mr. Alverez might not be the best candidate. I do not see him accepting enough of treatment to carry flash cards or documents around with him. I do think is male pride would get in the way of this tool. After thoughtful consideration I decided that the best strategy to use with Mr. Alverez cognitive intervention treatment would be thought change record. Write a treatment goal and objectives using cognitive interventions in this module. Treatment Goal: Mr. Alverez will reframe his thoughts on current situation. Objectives (list as many objectives as needed to meet the goal): 1) Using the model of thought change record Mr. Alverez will chart his thoughts and feelings about his current emotions regarding himself. 2) Mr. Alverez will identify his triggering event. 3) Mr. Alverez will interpretation the event. 4) Mr. Alverez will identify his emotions regarding the event. 5) Mr. Alverez will identify the intensity of emotions. 6) Mr. Alverez will select which cognitive distortion applies all cognitive distortions will be reviewed with Mr. Alverez and thoroughly explained. 7) Mr. Alverez will repeat steps 3 to 5 with a new interpretation. 8) Mr. Alverez will utilize this model to address other triggering events such as struggles with interviews, lack of gaining new employment, etc.. 9) Mr. Alverez will work in sessions with the clinician to develop change of though and address additional concerns that may arise. Interventions used in objectives (list all interventions used above in the objective section): Mr. Alvarez will use a brainstorming session in meetings with the clinician in order to identify triggering events and create thoughts of change. Mr. Alverez will utilize mindfulness to be fully immersed in his therapy sessions. Mr. Alverez will develop coping skills to reduce self-isolating behaviors and reconnect with his life.
