Limitations: One limitation is that psychological theories may not account for individual differences in behavior and motivation. For example, a theory that explains why most people commit a certain type of crime may not apply to a specific individual who committed that crime. Moreover, psychological theories area often based on research conducted in laboratory settings which may not always translate to real-world situations. According to a study conducted by the National Institute of Justice, psychological theories may be limited by the quality and quantity of data available. The study found that the data used to test psychological theories in criminal justice may be incomplete or biased, which can limit the accuracy of the theories. Additionally, psychological therioe may not be able to predict all types of criminal behavior, especially those that are rare or unique. The American Psychological Association states one way to address these limitations is to use a multimethod approach in research. This involves using a combination of different research methods to gather data, such as self- reports, behavioral observations, and physiological measures. This approach can help improve the accuracy and validity of phycological theories. Motivational Factors: Age can have an impact on motivation (APA, 2019). An APA study found that older adults are more likely to be motivated by goals that are related to emotional wellbeing, such as spending time with family and friend, than younger adults. On the other hand, younger adults are more likely to be motivated by goals that are related to financial success and career advancement. Regarding criminal behavior, age is a significant factor in predicting continued criminal behavior (National Institute of Justice). Individuals who engage in criminal behavior at a younger age seem to be more likely to advance in a path of criminal behavior as they get older. However, certain interventions like certain therapies can be effective in reducing criminal behavior among individuals of all ages. In conclusion, age can impact motivation and increase the chances of continued criminal behavior. However, interventions such as cognitive- behavioral therapy can be effective in reducing criminal behavior among individuals of any age.
