Early Childhood Interview and Observation Assignment Purpose The purpose of this assignment is for you to observe early childhood situations, reflect on what your observations mean, and determine, based on educational research from your text, what the next steps are to support the child/children in the observation. Course Objectives Covered 1. Examine and implement observation and interviewing skills as a means of understanding the child 2. Identify and explore ways to support diverse children/adolescents in their personal growth and development related to trust, autonomy, initiative, industry, and identity. Video Observation Requirement 1. You must watch each of the three videos for this assignment. 2. As you are watching, you must make notes on what you see on the documentation form. There is a separate form for each video. 3. 5 Observation Notes must be documented for each video in the “Observe and Document” box and accompanied by a reflection and a plan. 4. After documenting your observation, you must reflect on what that observation is telling you about the child. Think about this in terms of development and learning domains (cognitive, emotional, social, physical). See example. Write your reflection in the “Reflect” box on the observation form. 5. Finally, on the form in the “Planning for the Child” box, tell what supports, interventions, activities, etc. you would put into place to support the child or children in his/her/their personal growth. This should be based on information that you gathered from your text. See example. Observation Paper Requirement 1. After completing your Video Observation requirements, you will create a 1-2 page paper that answers the following questions: a. What new understandings about child development have you acquired by completing assignment? b. What did you learn about how young children think and organize? In what ways did the children’s thinking and abilities impress you? In what ways did you find their thinking/abilities limited? c. Discuss how observations can be used to inform educational practices in the classroom. d. What was your overall impression of the Observation activity?
Early Childhood Interview and Observation Assignment 2. Your paper must be double spaced in Arial 12 pt. font with 1” margins throughout. 3. You must have a proper title page in APA and a reference page highlighting your text for this course and any other references you may have used to complete the activity. What Do I Submit For This Assignment 1. Your “Observation, Reflect, Plan” document 2. A 1-2 page paper that answers the Interview/Observation questions thoroughly. This paper needs to be in APA (see directions above) with a proper title page and reference page.

Sample/Practice Observe and Document Domain/Behavior Reflect (What Does This Tell Me?) Planning for The Child (What Should Be Done Next) Example Cognitive Physical Gross Motor -An infant is trying to roll over and get up during diaper changes. -An infant is making reaching movements with her arms Fine Motor Social/Emotional Language -The infant is babbling constantly Adaptive It seems like this baby is ready to move; she can hardly wait until she is put down. It appears that the baby has the motor skills and drive to want to move (crawl/walk). The constant babbling tells me that she is trying to form words/communicate beyond cooing. Based on what I know about Vygotsky and Piaget, talking to the baby would help the child continue to formulate sounds into words. Having the baby in a language rich environment (lots of songs, conversation, book reading) would help the child to develop words. Giving the child plenty of opportunity to develop the large motor skills needed for crawling and walking through floor activities that involve reaching, pulling oneself up, etc…will allow for the child to develop her muscles needed for crawling and walking. Example Cognitive -Toddler is grouping objects by similar color -Toddler is grouping objects by similar theme Physical Gross Motor -A toddler is placing objects in a basket -A toddler is throwing plastic balls Fine Motor -Toddler is picking up objects using a pincer grasp Social/Emotional -The toddler is playing next to another child Language --child has several recognizable words (ball, mine, no, go) Adaptive It appears that this child is organizing her toys. This means that the child is cognitively creating organization schemes. This child is at the upper sub levels of the Sensorimotor Stage The toddler is continuing to build fine and gross motor skills through reaching, holding, and placing items in the basket. [ Each example should have a reflection point listed. In this example, I have listed more domain observations than I have created reflections for. This is just an example of HOW to complete the assignment.] Based on the work of Piaget, continuing to provide opportunities for the child to sort and organize would help to support the skill of classification that the child has begun. Talking to the child and asking why she chose those items and pointing out similarities would also help to build classification skills.
