Combatants Bartley 2 Combatants Whenever we look into our reading we get to learn about combatant, secular, and Christians both. For those who have never heard of this before tend to not understand very well. I know, whenever I hear the word combatants, I automatically begin to think of war and combat situations. Looking at our text book it tells us that secular combatants are those who have committed themselves to the psychological field and those who have a worldview that is considered antagonistic towards religious beliefs. Christian combatants are people with worldviews that make them suspicious of all human reason(Entwistle, 2015). As we begin to have a deeper understanding it can change what we think because we get to see it from different viewpoints. Many believe that the two do not belong together, which makes it a hard topic of discussion, although if you really look at them they do belong together in a sense. You can find so many different verses in scripture that talk about being a counselor and counseling others. Looking at everything and verses in scripture, do we really need to have psychology in order for us to counsel someone else? That is the biggest question that I heard in the video “Is Psychology Satan's Greatest Scheme”. In this video it mentions that psychology and theology do not really have a belonging together because we do not have to have a psychology degree in order for us to counsel others. Within our reading we are told that Christians and secular combatants are more alike than what one would think and even more alike than what we would believe. This is because psychology and theology are seen in similar ways. Growing up almost all of my friends did not grow up within a religion and do not necessarily believe in Christ, I shared my world with them in little ways. I would always try to invite my friends to church once in a great while, but more
Combatants Bartley 3 often I invited my friends to join me in youth groups. I always tried not to push my beliefs upon them because I do not want to be the one to push them. Pushing our beliefs onto someone would not be productive and could hinder efforts to express God's love to them. My best friend grew up with a completely different life and it was definitely an eye opener for me and I was able to understand another side of life. As I look through the different scriptures that have regards to counseling others and just talking to others about and sharing the word of God, I kept gravitating toward Proverbs 11:14 “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is victory”(ESV). There were two others that I was looking at as well. The first one being Galatians 6:2 “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ''(ESV). The other one that I had some interest in was Proverbs 24:6 “For by wise guidance you can wage your war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory”(ESV). So, what are your thoughts, do we need psychology in order for us to counsel others? .
