C OGNITIVE T HEORY P ROJECT : P LANNING A SSIGNMENT I NSTRUCTIONS O VERVIEW Your goal with this project is to create a work of art meant to persuade the viewer about a particular idea. You must decide on a target audience and a specific message about which you are trying to convince them. I NSTRUCTIONS After brainstorming, fill in this document with your project plans and submit the document as a PDF to Canvas saved as LastnameFirstname_cognitive_part1.pdf . Be sure to review the project grading rubric before submission. Target Audience Description: The audience that I wish to reach is going to be young adults between the ages of 18-25 of mainly the female demographic with any educational degree. I am wanting to reach those who spend time on any type of social media, which includes but is not limited to, facebook, instagram, or tiktok. In this section, describe the audience you wish to reach with your message. Be as specific as possible, listing demographic information (age/sex/education level/income/life stage/etc.) as well as psychographic information (likes/dislikes/beliefs/opinions on certain matters, etc.). Message Summary: To persuade the audience that the media is affecting society's mental health status. Examples: To persuade my target audience to donate blood. To persuade my target audience to believe recycling makes a difference. Research/Development – Mental Processes : After viewing the presentation, “Vision and the Communication Process,” in Module: Week 3, fill out the development information in the sections below. Provide a minimum of 2 sentences in response to each prompt. Memory –how do you plan to connect your visuals with any memories the target audience may have?
My goal is to connect visuals of different social media posts that portray an ideal physiological look or a specific set belief of what a person's life should look like. By using these visuals it will be seen how the “perfect” lives of others creates a huge effect on others mental health. Recognition –which company, cause, or concept will your audience be able to recognize inside your visual? They will be able to recognize the cause of social media on their mental health. They will hopefully be able to recognize Comparison –what do you want your target audience to compare this advertisement to? How will you accomplish this? I want my target audience to be able to compare this to the advertisement of the model industry and to reality shows that might show someone living the “perfect dream” life. I Salience/Relevance –what visual and/or textual plans do you have in place to make your project relevant to your target audience? I am wanting to use visuals so that people can make a connection with different social media. Through some understandable factual evidence of the connections between the two they should be able to visually see the growth in mental health in people who are in social media compared to
those who are not on social media. Association –do you plan to design your project in such a way that the audience would associate the visual with an event or activity? What is your plan for this? I plan to design my project in a way that the audience will be able to connect the events of how social media displays people's lives to how people may truly live. I plan to use some pictorial diagrams so that the audience has a visual and use some information I am learning about how it does affect people's mental health. Analysis –what distinct elements do you want your target audience to identify? I want my audience to see the elements of lack of societal influence. I want them to see that people's lives are however they choose to make them seem. Interpretation –how are you trying to persuade the audience? Note: This is not WHAT you are trying to persuade the audience, but rather how the content of your project will persuade your audience. I am wanting the content of this project to persuade the audience to take a look at what they are viewing on social media and what it may be doing to their mental health. I am wanting it to persuade them to take better care of themselves and to learn to weed out any negativity in their lives.

Research/Development – Mental Activities: After reading Chapter 2 in the textbook, fill out the development information in the sections below. Be sure to include plans to account for 3 of the mental activities that can affect visual perception. For each of your selected mental activities, briefly define the activity and your plan for how to counteract that within your project. Projection Projection ends up affecting our visual perfection because we have our own insecurities and we then put those into the world and then we have a clouded judgment and can not see how it truly is. With my project I want to be able to counteract that by making it where people see that others on social media have their own issues with projection and things that they dislike about themselves as well. Their lives are not as beautiful and perfect as we think or how we want ours to be. Through my project I want to show young women that they should learn to be able to love themselves so that they can enjoy happiness and no longer have a cloudy visual through their insecurities and mental health struggles that social media has created for them. Expectation Because of the different beliefs that we have grown up with, it can affect our visual perception of the world based on our past experiences. Through my project I want to be able to show people that we can not have set expectations for ourselves because every life is different and if we set our expectations that our
lives are going to be an instagram world perfect then we have created false hope for ourselves. Through this project I want to be able to show young women that they do not have to live up to others expectations. Culture Every place has some kind of cultural difference and what they perceive for beauty or what life should be like. Because of the way culture shapes our lives people ten to feel stressed out that they might not fit into cultural norms. Through my project I want to be able to show that there are no real cultural norms to fit into because it is impossible for everyone to be the same. With my project I want to show young women that they do not have to fit into the culturals definition of beauty or how a female should act into society.
