1 Self-Reflective Essay Joseph Lovett Marriage & Family Therapy, Touro University Worldwide MFT 613: Child-Focused Family Therapy Dr. Melissa Lund June 25, 2023
THE GOTTMAN METHOD: BRENDA AND STEVE 2 Self-Reflective Essay Descriptions of how you feel you improved your knowledge, skills, abilities, and yourself in this session through this course. After completing this course, my understanding of children and families' distinct challenges has expanded significantly. The knowledge and skills gained through this program have enabled me to serve this demographic with greater confidence and expertise. Before completing the signature assignment, I was uncertain and apprehensive when interacting with children, partially due to my role as a social worker working with youth aged 13-19. However, through the resources provided in this course, including the importance of observing and documenting experiences and customizing interactions, I have enhanced my abilities and feel more confident in my engagements. The program has provided me with a more positive outlook on working with children, and I am excited to continue expanding my knowledge and capabilities in this field. Evaluation of the work you did during the session for the class and explanations of ways you could have performed better. Throughout this course, I have dedicated much effort towards completing all assigned readings, videos, and discussion questions to the best of my abilities. While I am content with my overall performance, I recognize the importance of prioritizing self-care to optimize my learning experience. In addition to my regular contributions, I intend to conduct additional research on the subject matter and expand upon the points I raise in my discussion threads. I acknowledge that I fell short of expectations in certain aspects of my posts, and I am committed to allocating more time to improve in those areas as I move forward. Topics you have identified that you did not understand or were not successful in trying to implement and suggestions you may have about how to improve the course material on those topics.
THE GOTTMAN METHOD: BRENDA AND STEVE 3 In my perspective, investing further resources into discussion and casework assignments that specifically cater to adolescents grappling with substance abuse would be highly beneficial. The alarming increase in fentanyl usage in our society highlights the urgency of comprehending and analyzing the elements contributing to substance abuse, particularly in this age group. Increasing attention in this area will prepare and sensitize the MFT in developing more efficient and productive interventions and strategies to tackle this prevalent problem by delving deeper into this issue. Ways you might measure the future effects of what you have learned in this course or your future progress/improvement. Throughout this program, I have gained an extensive understanding of various therapy models that can significantly enhance the well-being of my clients and improve their overall quality of life. I plan to use the following models, including play therapy, art therapy, cognitive- behavioral therapy (CBT) for both parents and children, family therapy, Gestalt therapy, as taught by Dr. Oaklander, and attachment-based therapy.  These therapy models offer unique approaches to addressing various challenges that clients may face, whether emotional, behavioral, or relational. Play therapy, for example, is an effective method for children as it allows them to express themselves through play and facilitates emotional development. On the other hand, art therapy will enable clients to express themselves through art and can be an incredibly therapeutic process for individuals of all ages. Both of which were foreign to me. I now see the impact and benefit of such approaches.  CBT is a widely used therapy model that identifies and changes negative thought patterns and behaviors. It is a highly effective therapy for both children and adults and can be used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression. Family therapy is another important therapy model that I intend to incorporate into my future practice. It involves working with the entire family unit to identify and address challenges that may affect the family.

THE GOTTMAN METHOD: BRENDA AND STEVE 4 This approach can be incredibly effective in improving communication and strengthening familial relationships. Additionally, my experience working with adolescents will be a valuable asset as I continue working with teenagers. Adolescence can be a challenging time for many individuals, and having the expertise to address these challenges can significantly impact their mental health and overall well-being.
