Katarina Quintero American Politics Week 4 – assignment 4 Honestly in my family we do not really get into politics as much as I know other families do. We do sit around and watch the news at times and talk about what’s happening around the world. I do not enjoy watching the news or reading the newspaper and hearing about all the negative stuff that is happening in our world these days. I will at times ask my parents there thoughts and feelings about certain things that are going on in the world or that I question. One major event that my family and I did talk about was when president Obama got elected for president. My family being democratic we were all happy and we all discussed the good things that he would do as a president. I totally agree with the survey data that shows a strong link between parents’ attitudes and the attitudes of their children. I believe that if you grow up in a republican household then you are more than likely to be a republican because of the influence your parents had on you. It’s the same exact thing with democrats. I think that high school education does typically encourage students to register in vote. For example, in my government class my teacher went over the basic skills that we would need to know to understand to vote for the “right” person. For weeks my teacher would tell us everyday to not forget to register to vote. For the ones that were under eighteen she would tell them that next year they would have a better chance and hopefully by then we would know fully whom we should vote for. By the time I graduated I had a better knowledge of the government system and how it worked compared to when I graduated middle school. I would say that I was more tolerant after high school then I was in middle school. I would question people in middle school why they liked the republican more than the democratic or vice versa. I would tell my friends that I was a democratic because my parents are and once I entered my government course I had more knowledge of what I wanted to know about. I think that being in a college course is just an overview of what I learned in high school but goes into more depth about what I had already learned. I think being in the course has just
Katarina Quintero American Politics Week 4 – assignment 4 reinforced my political beliefs and made me more understanding of others and mine political beliefs. I do not think that college professors have liberal views that they seek to “force” on students. I think that roles of a high school or college professor are to educate us students on government and not to make use students believe their political beliefs. They should be giving us more knowledge and understanding of what we should know and what we will take on with us as we continue our education. Especially if we are perusing a major in politics this could be very useful.
