Katelynn Sims 1. What role does an artist have in the social aspects of society? I think an artist has the role of putting current or past events into something people can understand and see a different point of view. 2. Does an artist have a responsibility to comment on society? A artist is still a human, they have the right to comment on the society, knowing that everyone also has different opinions. 3. If so, how can they do so responsibly? Do they have to do so responsibly? They do not have to do it responsibly but too be kind is also a moral. 4. Does Walker maintain neutrality in her artwork or does she “choose a side”? I think she shows neutrality, I seen many races and some poor and rich individual. 5. Is Walker’s ethnicity or gender relevant to her content? In a sense, we cannot say we can see she feels passionately about her ancestors. 6. Does Walker’s simplification of objects and people make the content “easier” for viewers to digest? Yes, the simple objects shows enough and the characters showed just enough for the emotion.
By: Kara Walker In this artwork, you can see the chains on the people, the man on top of the construction, with looks to be money and wine looking as if he is selfish and dressed nicely. The characters all have the same shape and chains follow a certain pattern. This painting to me is basically our society today. Chasing after money, some willing to steal and worse for this paper. A man who sits high and wealthy while giving little pity for the unfortunate. Too busy fighting for paper, that they cant fight for the freedom.
