Katelynn Sims SPCH-1315-W2 February 25, 2023 Introduction – About 44 percent of prisoners in the United States suffer from a serious mental illness. Not small things like depression, anxiety, or things of that sort. We are discussing bigger health issues like paranoia or schizophrenia that cause one to have a false reality. Not truly able to control their own thoughts or actions. 1. Mental illnesses that cause one to commit a criminal act. a. Paranoia, schizophrenia, hallucinations, or excessive anger are top mental illnesses that could cause one to commit a criminal act if left untreated. b. One may confuse a hallucination or so with reality. c. Not being able to comprehend true intentions or able to control their own emotions and may seem to be provoked. 2. Funding and making the way to help and provide the treatment for these individuals. a. Medicaid being the main option for those incarcerated with serious mental health complications. b. A good percent of individuals can not afford a health care to cover them while incarcerated and no prior reliable family to help as well c. Study shows that people with mental health issues dramatically worsen when processed into a criminal facility hints why the percentage of suicides happen. 3. When and why, it is important to tend to these illnesses as soon as possible to help rehabilitate. a. In criminal justice, the goal is to rehabilitate, correct and serve justice.

b. For many, they have no awareness to their mental health issues until they are introduced to the criminal process. c. The needs for mental issues and finding the right path to help these individuals and put them back into society, if not given the special needs they cannot improve and correct their mistakes. Conclusion – This is not a very open conversation that many discuss or worry about until it is brought to you or a loved one. When we ignore such things and categorize incarcerated individuals as one, we forget that innocent people, mental health or even drug users are also categories of their own. Most criminal facilities don’t have the resources or professionals to help those who suffer from, with the chances that one can be helped and put back into society.
