Lesson 5 Assignment: Moral Reasoning Caitlin Shea Professor Karina Arzumanova DEP2004-7: Human Growth and Development 10/13/2023
1. Should Sharon tell Jill's name to the security officer? Why? Sharon should not tell Jill’s name to the security officer because they are best friends. It wouldn’t be the right thing to do to throw her under the bus so that she doesn’t get in trouble. Also, Sharon shouldn’t fear getting in trouble if she doesn’t give her friend’s name to the storeowner, because she was not the one who shoplifted so she wouldn’t get in trouble regardless. It appears the store owner was just trying to scare Sharon into releasing Jill’s name. 2. Would it make any difference if Jill had recently done a big favor for Sharon? It would not make a difference if Jill had recently done a big favor for Sharon because in a friendship you don’t do things for each other expecting something in return. Since Jill and Sharon are best friends, if she chooses not to tell the store owner Jill’s name it is because she is looking out for her friend regardless of anything Jill might have done recently for her. 3. Would it make a difference if they were not good friends? It would not make a difference if Sharon and Jill were not good friends because at the end of the day Sharon was not the one who shoplifted in the first place so she wouldn’t get in trouble if she didn’t release Jill’s name to the store owner. If Sharon is not going to get in
trouble it doesn’t make sense to get Jill in trouble regardless of how strong their friendship is. 4. What factors should Sharon consider in making her decision? The factors that Sharon should consider in making her decision would be the fact that Sharon will not get in trouble whether she releases Jill’s information or not and how strong her friendship is with Jill. Since Sharon and Jill are best friends, Sharon throwing Jill under the bus could seriously affect their friendship. Jill may begin to feel as though she doesn’t trust Sharon and that she does not have her back. This may result in Sharon and Jill’s friendship not being as strong, or even worse their friendship could potentially end. Sharon also must consider the amount of trouble Jill could get in if she gets caught. If Jill gets caught, she could get in serious legal trouble. 5. Is shoplifting wrong? Why? What's the most important reason why it is wrong? Yes, shoplifting is considered wrong because it involves taking something without paying for it, which goes against the rules and laws of society. Shoplifting can harm businesses and individuals and can sometimes have legal consequences. The most important reason that shoplifting is wrong is because it is not fair to the store and the people who own it. Shoplifting is taking something that doesn’t belong to you without permission.
