PHLY 165 – Bioethics Paper #2 Due Date: November 15 th Format: 5 pages + Works Cited pg double spaced 1" margins 12 pt. Times New Roman in-text citations (author p#) Paper #2 The Moral Permissibility of Physician-Assisted Suicide The purpose of this assignment is to study various perspectives on the morality of PAS and use them to support your own view. Is death ever an acceptable medical outcome/goal? How articulately and persuasively can you make your case? **Do not focus on “ allowing to die ,” or “ active euthanasia ” - stay focused on the issue of physician-assisted suicide and the “right to die” by consent. Read essays regarding PAS by specific ethicists like Brock, Callahan, Arras, Carr, Ackerman, etc. Draw on the ideas of at least three Bioethicists in your discussion, and apply their ideas in specific ways. 1. Which arguments do you agree with? Which do you disagree with? Why? 2. Can PAS ever be morally permissible? If so, when? When is it NOT morally permissible? 3. Write an essay which describes both sides of the debate , and argue for one of the positions . Use your knowledge of ethical theories and principles in order to support or refute the author's argument. Refer to the five humanitarian ethical principles in order to back up your claims. Also refer to intuition, utilitarianism, duty ethics, virtue ethics, or any other relevant theories in supporting your view. 1. Think about what your final conclusion will be – what claim do you want to make? Mention this in your introductory paragraph. 2. Use evidence (premises) which demonstrate that your point of view is right. Draw on what you have learned about moral principles and theories. 3. Consider what your opponent will say, and respond to likely criticism. Your goal is to be convincing and thorough. Try to give fair treatment to different perspectives. Be objective. 4. Be sure to use citations and a works cited page.
A successful essay will contain the following elements: a) clear thesis statement articulating your view in intro paragraph b) presentation of premises which support your point of view c) presentation of the opposing argument d) response to opposition argument (which shows that your view is superior) e) application and discussion of theory from at least THREE philosophers covered in class f) use of credible external sources (books, journal articles) and inclusion of Works Cited page g) accurate application of moral theory, principles, and concepts from the course h) discusses details: specific people, places, events, companies, decisions, etc. i) insightful philosophical analysis which goes beyond reporting on the facts Do research to develop your paper. Use the CCC library/databases to find high-quality sources. Apply everything you have learned from the course. Do your best work. Cite sources for facts in text as (author p#) (Johnson 185) do not rely on quotes, discuss the issue in your own voice while remaining objective as possible
