Ethical Decision-Making Name: Carson Poarch Course: CWV-101-O512 Date: 07/18/23 Instructor: Robert Vaughan For questions 2-6, choose from the "Decision-Making Cases" document in the topic Resources. Use critical thinking as well as support from the topic Resources to answer the following prompts. 1. Why do Christians believe that morality is absolute and objective, rather than relative and subjective? If morality is objective, where do Christians get their moral standard? Cite Chapter 7 of The Beginning of Wisdom textbook and/or topic overview. Include the resources you use on a reference page at the end of this document. Your answer in 75-100 words: Christians believe that morality is absolute and objective because our faith is heavily rooted in the Bible. We learn from these historical events and see that our lives often resemble some of these documented accounts. As Christians we understand that the nature of God is unchanging and therefore we understand right and wrong from principles that He created. We get many of our moral standards from the Bible and through living our lives in line with how Jesus lived. He is our ultimate example. Saying this we have a natural understanding of right and wrong. 1. Use the case you chose from the "Decision-Making Cases" document to answer the following questions to build the Christian ethical response. Use logical reasoning (general revelation). Cite Bible passages (special revelation), The Beginning of Wisdom textbook, and/or the topic overview. Include the resources you use on a reference page at the end of this document. a. Which case did you choose? The Abortion Case. a. In Chapter 2 of The Beginning of Wisdom textbook and the Topic 1 Overview, the elements of a worldview (ultimate reality, nature of the universe, humanity, knowledge, ethics, purpose) are presented. In the case you chose, which worldview element is going to be the biggest factor for determining right and wrong in the case you chose? Why? Your answer in 75-100 words: I believe that with this case, it is hard to pick one specific element that determines right and
wrong. For starters I think that abortion is a topic that is very controversial. I believe that abortion is a very sensitive subject that often comes with extreme pressure and heartache. In my eyes abortion violates almost all of the elements that make up the Christian worldview. I think that it violates humanity, takes away a child's right to find their purpose on this earth and is extremely unethical. I do believe there are circumstances where it can be talked about and prayed about fervently, but for the most part it is like playing God. “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it” (Diffey & Holland, 2022) Every human life is special and has a purpose. Every child is a gift from God. In conclusion abortion goes against human nature and is seen as very sinful to God. To Him, every life is worth a place on earth! a. How does the Christian worldview describe the worldview element you identified? Your answer in 75-100 words: In Christianity is typically understood that humans have a moral compass. People understand right from wrong because they have guides such as the spirit, Bible and Jesus’ example. Christians try to live life as ethically as they can, walking in our Saviors footsteps. We do this by following the ten commandments and allowing the spirit to guide us in every step in our lives. Our goal is to spread God's love upon the whole earth. I think that by describing ethics and humanity we can see that they build a strong foundation in the gospel. Without them our relationship with God cannot be as strong. They help us to strengthen the belief that all life forms are valuable and personally designed with a plan from God. God loves all of His children. a. What are Bible passages (cite two or three) that will guide the ethics for the case you choose? How do these Bible passages apply to this case? Your answer in 75-100 words: “From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help” (Psalm 22:10-11). “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations”(Jeremiah 1:5) These verses show that God knows each one of us personally and has plans for us on this earth. Each soul is so special and has a purpose on this earth. God is with us everyday and we push Him away when we take away His child's life. Abortion is something that is seen as murder in God’s eyes. Although we have free agency, we are taking away the child's ability to come to earth and make their own choices. God loves us and knows our potential even when
we are in the womb. We are all important to Him! a. Based on your answers to b and c, explain the Christian response to the case you chose. In other words, how might the Christian worldview resolve the issue? Your answer in 75-100 words: Ruth would choose to keep the baby if she lived by the Christian worldview. Just because the baby has down syndrome does not mean that the child has any less worth in God's eyes. Even if she chose not to keep the baby she could put it up for adoption so it still had a chance at life and to grow and see God’s hand in their life! Abortion more times than not leads to guilt and a block from God. Every life is valuable to God. He allows us to have trials because He knows that we can handle them. God is always on our side and loves every child no matter what. 1. Your previous responses built a Christian ethical stance and provided a Christian resolution for the case. How might this Christian resolution to the issue increase human dignity and human value? Your answer in 50-75 words: Abortion laws that restrict this act are needed for humans to have dignity and value. These laws help us to stand up for God’s children who do not have a voice of their own yet. He knows them and knows their worth, we have to stand up for this cause and allow all children to have a chance to make something of themselves. God ordains all things on this earth including government and these laws must be in line with God to allow society to reflect His love for all of His children. 1. The Christian position that humans should flourish comes from belief in the goodness of God. How so? What are the connections between God's goodness and human flourishing? Your answer in 50-75 words: Christians believe that humans should flourish because of the goodness of God, because we are born into a sinful world and are sinful beings. With God's help, and as we come to know and follow Him, we are able to walk the path that God has planned for us. This allows us to flourish in a way that is best for us and for those who are around us. As we learn about God and come to appreciate His teachings, morals, and standards, we are changed and can make it to a point where we are worthy to live with Him in heaven. 1. Considering the Christian resolution you built for the case and everyone involved in the scenario, what might be some benefits or unintended consequences that come from this

resolution? What might be challenging for people to accept or do? Your answer in 75-100 words: I think for this case the Christian resolution would be to keep the baby. I think that there are so many benefits to keeping the child. You will not feel guilt for keeping the child, and will feel a love like no other. A downside may be that the child is harder to raise, but God may use this as a lesson to bring us closer to Him. He is always with us and that is not different in this situation. I think something that may be challenging is finding patience and educating yourself on how to raise a disabled child. I think that the most challenging thing would be to prepare yourself for something that you know will be hard, but will be worth it. All of God’s children matter! 1. What are some ways that Christians should be active in helping to alleviate the suffering related to this issue? Give specific examples that ordinary people can do. Your answer in 75-100 words: I think that there are so many ways that Christians can be active in helping people through situations like this one. For starters, we can explain how important a life is to God and how many serious health issues can be seen when aborting a child. To be even more proactive we can vote against abortions, help future mothers do research and find help groups and donate to pro-life organizations. I believe that as Christians the biggest thing we can do is support the woman who is making these decisions. We are taught to love no matter what. We never know what others are going through and if they can handle things. God knows all and all He has asked us to do is love His children through the good and the bad.
