2 Teach to Test LaTanya M. Evans School of Public Service and Education, Capella University EDD8040: Research Design for Practitioners Dr. Sue October 22, 2023
2 Teach to Test At Florida Avenue Elementary school, there is a lack of teaching that is happening in 1 st grade. Teachers are being told and advised to Teach to Test, which is testing only specific items that can be found on the test. The teacher are constantly being pulled in areas of a workshop, training, or meeting. This constant pulling takes away from the amount of minutes of which the students gets serviced.” A more viable teaching-to-the-test criticism concerns teaching in a manner that is not considered optimal for learning standard content or skills, but is believed to improve test performance. Instruction on standardized test formats: such as multiple-choice, drilling with test maker-provided workbooks, or administering practice tests are examples (Shepard 1990, p. 19).” Teaching to test has become a trend that many Districts utilize to bring up test scores. However, this method is creating issues for many of the students. Students are not learning any foundational skills that are needed. In theory the students the students’ scores are very low. The teachers are teaching directly from the test. A new age teacher would agree that this is a new way for students to learn. A well-seasoned teacher would not agree with teaching to test. Buckner writes, “When teachers start to make teaching decisions based on a test, we become powerless: Powerless to make any reasonable instructional decisions; powerless to do what is best for the learners sitting in front of us” (212). The underlying issue is that more than ½ of the 1 st grade at Florida Ave elementary score are low. 1 st grade teachers have met with instructional coaches as well as administration about what can be done to correct and help the issue Behavior also plays a huge part with these particular students. A decision was made to scratch the current curriculum and all the teachers to teach the kids the basic skills. The letters of the alphabet along with all sounds and phonemes Also re0teaching, saying, and writing numbers to 50 to start. This
2 is still happening; however, teachers have also started to incorporate parts of the curriculum. Gettig, an author for the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education believes that “Teaching creativity, encourages sharing ideas and taking risks, and concedes that there may not be one right answer” (1114). All children and adults learn in diverse ways, so this way of teaching extremely limits that. It does not allow room for creative thinking. Gettig also stated that “The educational system has suppressed creativity and has also taught students that there is only one right answer to a problem.” (1144) Gap Analysis Discussion

2 1. A gap analysis will aid in determining any areas that may require immediate attention of guidance based on any current objectives or goals. This analysis would be crucial as it would help to see exactly where the gaps are, and begin collecting resources/remedies to close those gaps. 2. It is possible to develop a problem of practice without 1 st conducting a gap analysis. A problem of practice being developed first allows the gap analysis to come in and analyze goals in addition to seeing what should be occurring versus what is actually occurring. The gap analysis will allow to identify growth opportunities within the problem of practice, as well as prioritizing resources. 3. A gap analysis is there to help a problem of practice. The analysis will pinpoint any gaps that lie in the problem of practice, as it will aid in finding the particular resources to bridge that gap. References
