“Mandatory Military Service In America” When It comes to the topic of mandatory military, ambiguity is prevalent. Everyone has different feelings about what they feel. The topic itself may spark a debate here and there. Whether people are avid supporter or someone who disagrees, everyone has different views and sentiments about this specific topic. Today, The discussion will discuss “Mandatory Military Service in America” and how it builds onto the argument for pro-mandatory military. First, the author emphasizes many of their points, but primarily in the 4th paragraph. The topic mainly consists of the author explaining to the reader that since they have natural-born rights and rights that were brought by blood, sweat, and tears (as well as sacrifice ), they should fight to protect them. Paragraph 4 reads, “Asking all citizens to actively serve to protect their rights is only fair. As Americans, we all share in our freedoms. Isn’t it only just that we all shoulder the obligation to uphold those freedoms’’? National defense should be a citizenship duty, with risks shared equally across the board.” This point showcases the author's belief of being for mandatory militarism. They believe that since Americans have rights and the luxury of being free, they can show their gratitude and, in a sense, “give back to their country” by fighting for their country and returning the favor. This can show not only loyalty but also showing obedience and reimbursement. This builds onto their argument that mandatory military service is fair and necessary because not only are those in go into active service fighting for themselves but they are fighting for their country, family, friends, peers, ETC. This is a huge duty to fulfill, but remembering who they are fighting for and what they are fighting for makes the responsibility much more meaningful and special. Second, In the earlier parts of the article, The topic of mandatory service and American citizenship is brought to the reader's attention. The idea that this service could help preserve the privilege that many hold in this country is a point that is given relatively early but a point that can make one think. Paragraph 2 reads, “Compulsory national service would strengthen American citizenship. During World War I and II especially, Americans took pride in serving their country by fighting for it. Stalwart men and women helped us win freedom at home as well as abroad. Few people dispute that our current system of using a volunteer army has been a success. Nonetheless, in making military service optional for American citizens, a gulf has formed between professional soldiers and civilians. In sharp contrast to the past, most of today’s leaders have never served In the military --------- nor have their children. William A. Galston, a former adviser to President Clinton, stated in U.S News and World Report, “ For most of us, defending our country is something we watch on television. Little in the lives of young Americans helps them understand that citizenship is more than a list of rights to which they are entitled.” This piece of evidence
tells us how mandatory service can help strengthen our citizenship. It uses examples from past historical events to emphasize the point they're trying to convey and show the reader how the values they are talking about have been used before. Third, Mandatory service can help unite the country. Allowing mandatory services can unite the country and bring people out of their shells. When service members go into active service, they are being put into a group of people from different parts of the world, people that share different beliefs, different races, and the list goes on. This can help create unity as well as promote diversity. This rings true in Paragraph 5, Which reads, “ Finally, compulsory military service would unite the country and serve as a rite of passage. Most Americans live in narrow communities, where people tend to dress, think, and act alike. Joining the military would allow young adults to leave their sheltered communities and meet people who they otherwise likely would never have met.” This point alone shows how mandatory service can help not only bring unity within our country but can also bring those who may be used to a specific norm to be introduced to new things and people. This can build relationships and new experiences and bring people from all walks of life together to do something special but, most importantly, help fight for their country. Finally, throughout most of the article, the authors showcase the support of mandated military service and point out that those who fight are fighting for their rights, helping preserve American citizenship, helps promote unity and diversity.
