Presentation Assignment: Biblical Origins of the Constitution Assignment
Everyone in the Constitutional Convention all had completely different ideas and it seemed that no one at the time wanted to agree on the article we know and live by, known as the Constitution. There was not disagreement on just certain ideas and plans alone, but delegation of power, weaknesses when it came to parts of the Constitution and others as well. The main issue was who would have more power, the States or the Federal Government. Another big issue that they were having difficulties addressing was that the Federal Government lacks the ability to impose taxes. When it came to issues with the biggest disagreements, power, slavery and weaknesses in
the Articles of Confederation the North and South had different views and different States also had their own outlooks and views on this. Smaller States had feared larger States because they initially wanted population-based representation. When it came to power some were focused on rights and others wanted a strong central Government. When the issues were addressed, it took a separation of powers and reaching key compromises to make it work. The key components were the Commerce, the Three-Fifths and the Great Compromise, each of these dealing with issues ranging from slavery to taxation. They separated powers between the 3 branches, the Legislative, the Executive and the Judicial, to prevent too much power being held by one branch only. The Constitution holds very Biblical morals, values and principles and protecting the rights of others is something we want to continue doing. There are multiple scriptures from the Bible throughout the Constitution, Isaiah 33:22 states “for the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our law giver, the Lord is our King; he will save us.”
Isaiah 33:22 and the principle taken from it focuses on the idea of giving one branch more power
than the other and maintaining checks and balances. This principle is still very well in practice
today. An example is going to be protecting individuals and their rights, the Judicial Branch, by upholding the Constitution in return does protect the rights of individuals. Genesis 1:27 states “so God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.” I picked this scripture because of the Biblical principle to it and its relevance today. With the idea and principle behind this being that everyone is in fact created equally. The Fourteenth Amendment and the Equal Protection Clause is another perfect example of how Genesis ties in with the Constitution. The 4 issues that God has seen as his highest priority is abortion, marriage protection, Judicial appointments and religious acknowledgement. Due to previous recent events that taken place I am choosing to speak on a case referring to abortion. While I cannot cast judgement because I too have had to be placed in a situation, and I also know and understand the importance of God’s law when it comes to this topic. I know the most known case lately regarding abortion is Roe v Wade, but after doing a little more reading I had stumbled upon Lambert v Wicklund where the question at hand was “is a Montana statute authorizing the Judicial bypass of parental notification as to a minor’s abortion, under conditions including a showing that notification is not in best interest of minor, unconstitutional?” (oyes.org). To summarize this case, it states that before an abortion is performed on a minor a parent must be notified, but if not notifying a parent would be in the minor’s best interest, they can petition the courts for a waiver. If they choose to petition the courts the minor will have representation, and everything will remain anonymous and confidential. There are three conditions that any of those three can be met and the minor will be granted a waiver. These conditions according to (loc.gov) are (i) the minor is “sufficiently mature to decide whether to have an abortion” ;(ii) “there is evidence of a pattern of physical, sexual or emotional abuse” of

the minor by one of her parents, a guardian, or a custodian; or (iii) “the notification of a parent or
guardian is not in the best interest of the [minor].” The issue that needed to be addressed was the third one, they had made the statement that it was too “narrow”, so it had been seen as unconstitutional. All in all, the case due to the topic of the case, it would go against the Fifth Commandment “Thou Shall Not Kill”.
I am going to use a verse that was stated in the speech because I try to apply this to my life daily, Isaiah 58:6 1-7, Fasting, sharing your food with other who have none, opening your homes to those who lack one, share clothes with those who are unclothed. As far as programs around this area, unfortunately with the population we have there are not many programs who are incredibly beneficial. We have 3 transitional houses that are mostly males with substance abuse and have very minimal beds, one shelter that is a first come first serve basis, 2 food pantry’s, 2 housing assistance agencies. We have a population of 72,876 people according to stats from 2021. The housing assistance is County/State ran and I am sure the waitlist for certain assistance is up to a year or more wait. I personally volunteer as a FF/EMT in the county over as well as assisting in a peer support group and I assist with debriefs across North Carolina. So not only do I get to help the community that’s given so much but I get to help my peers. I also bring clothes and blankets and pass them directly to the shelters. I enjoy making hygiene bags and go to areas that are known for homelessness and meet with them in person. I wholeheartedly feel as if by me handing items directly to them instead of them waiting months for what little help is offered is a better outcome.
