Assignment #1 – Critical Thinking
Scenario 1:
Solo Physician Practice I decided that the best practice for this scenario would be the Solo Physician Practice because the
scenario is that the person has a desire to go to a physician who will know them by name and treat them like family. The textbook states that patients can benefit specifically from this type of practice because “They know the patient by name, treat them like family, and offer individual attention and care” (Linda L. French; Lisa H. Turner, pg. 29). Going to this kind of practice allows for a person to build trust and loyalty with the physician. Choosing this practice will allow the physician to make decisions solely for the patient’s best interest because they are free of any kind of higher officials to control the decisions made. Scenario 2:
Urgent Care Centers
This medical setting would be the most beneficial regarding to the scenario because the person would like to walk into an office without having to make an appointment. Many times, you must make an appointment to go see a doctor and then wait until your appointment to get your concern
taken care of. But going to urgent care you have the option to just walk-in and be treated. The textbook states “Some centers provide extended hours to accommodate patients who have problems getting to the doctor…They may also have walk-in capability for minor emergencies and urgent health problems” (Linda L. French; Lisa H. Turner, pg. 31). Going to urgent cares can
also have decreased wait times. There is nothing worse than feeling sick and finding yourself at the end of a long waitlist just to be seen by a doctor. For this reason, a lot of people choose to visit urgent cares instead. Scenario 3:
Group Practice
I believe that the Group Practice setting would be the best fit for this scenario because it would allow a person to strengthen their skills, where they can get feedback and interact with their colleagues. The textbook states “With more specific duties, the knowledge and job skills become more specialized” (Linda L. French; Lisa H. Turner, pg. 29). Working in a medical group practice will allow each individual to enjoy a much better work-life balance while also giving them the flexibility to work independently in a larger group. Scenario 4:
Hospitals
I think being in a hospital setting would be the best fit for a person trying to work with people who have more intensive care needs. Hospitals not only have one career focus, but they have also
so many career opportunities for a person to explore. They typically treat a specific type of patient rather than the public. The textbook states “Hospitals are facilities that provide 24-hour acute care and treatment for the sick and injured. They also provide emergency medical care.”
(Linda L. French; Lisa. H Turner, pg. 32). Specifically for this scenario I would say that specialty
hospitals would be a perfect fit since the person does want to work with someone like their friend
who is a burn victim. Scenario 5:
Holistic Health Environment
I chose this setting to be the best fit for the scenario because the person believes that the physician should treat more so the body, mind, and soul rather than the illness or injury itself. The textbook states that “…the physical, mental, and social well-being of the “whole” person is as important as the treatment of separate medical problems” (Linda L. French; Lisa H. Turner, pg. 37). In this type of setting the physicians work with patients to help them recover their own health and wellness instead of just treating their physical ailments.
