After reading the assigned sections of the AACC's Code of Ethics Y-2023 (see Resources section below), answer the below prompt:
Prompt:
You are a clinical counselor operating out of an urban Christian counseling center. You are a PhD candidate (all but dissertation), licensed professional counselor (LPC), with two years of supervised experience. Your clinical orientation is cognitive-behavioral therapy, specializing in issues related to depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. You are given a couple to assist with a presenting problem of marital tension in a biracial marriage, struggling with a cultural issue that is creating a wedge in the marriage, which is made worse with problems related to anxiety. You have very little experience with this type of presenting problem.
How would you handle this? After the initial meeting with them, would you be inclined to refer them to another professional more qualified than you on the specifics of the presenting problem? Would you be inclined to seek the help of a cultural ‘broker,’ and then ask for supervised assistance and attempt to help them? Be specific with your rationale and course of action.
I approach this with forethought and consideration with an emphasis on meeting the clients needs be they continuous learning, consultations with a more experienced professional or referral to a more experienced professional. (AACC Y-2023 Code of Ethics, 2023.) As discussed in "Counseling the Culturally Diverse," During the initial assessment/meeting, I would first determine whether the couple and I are a good fit for each other in terms of basic counseling. In addition, I would talk about the cultural and/or racial problems that are causing anxiety and driving a wedge in the marriage. (Al and Sue, 2022). In order to determine where there needs lie, I would concentrate on getting to know the couple and each person during this consultation. As a professional. If I am unable to provide the needed care
with or without assistance, I would let them know. I would also ascertain how
comfortable they were with me, and if they feel we are a good fit. If either I am unable to provide care or they are not comfortable receiving care from me. would discuss assisting them in looking for a better fit if it becomes clear
during this meeting that I am unable to ascertain the knowledge to help them in their particular concerns or if I am unable to work with them. I would
then assist in finding them someone who is more knowledgeable about their particular concerns, if available but I would not leave them without help. When a couple feels uneasy about me, my level of experience, or whether we are not a good fit, I will always try to find what's best for the patient. Knowledge comes to the perceptive heart because the wise ears actively seek it out. (The Holy Bible, 1984, Proverbs 18:15)
I would then assess whether or not I am a good fit for them. If I can ascertain
the needed knowledge, if I can truly work to develop and maintain cultural awareness in the issues they are facing regarding their cultural issues or if I am out of my league. In an ideal world, I would seek out supervised assistance if I felt that I was unable to quickly gain cultural awareness and knowledge about the matter at hand. This way, I could gain more experience
and knowledge for when I encounter the same situation in the future. If I determine that I can gain the needed cultural knowledge and awareness while still meeting cultural competency standards. I would be upfront with them and tell them that I don't have much experience in this area, but I can work with them to navigate their needs. In addition, I would make use of the time I had before our next appointment. This way when we meet I would have had the time to gather the relevant data. Using available resources; consulting more seasoned counselors, research on their particular cultures and needs. This would hopefully gain me the insight needed for their circumstances. I would handle clients on a case by case basis. Referring to AACC Y-2023 Code of Ethics, Biblical wisdom, and cultural competence in my
approach as needed. ensuring that my dedication to moral and practical counseling practice is genuine.
