1 The Impact of "Judging a Book by its Cover" The Impact of "Judging a Book by its Cover" Written Assignment 9.1: Yordanka Nardoni SOCI3310: Cultural Diversity Instructor: Dr. Amber E. George February 3, 2023
2 The Impact of "Judging a Book by its Cover" As a healthcare provider, I have encountered many patients in my career, and I have learned to understand and acknowledge different cultures and beliefs. Besides most of the time appreciate some of those extraneous views. We as humans have assumptions about almost everything or everyone at one point in our lives. Also, we must take into consideration any traumas that we may have happened. Like the horrific attack on 9/11. Without any understanding or knowledge, the Arab/Muslim American community suffers prejudice and aggressiveness. Most Arab/Muslims respect and follow the word of the Qur’an, which is a book principally, provides guides for many Arab/Muslims. The Hijab (the covering of their hair) is to maintain modesty and privacy from unrelated males . The assumption from the Caucasian women was uneducated and prejudiced. This is established by the impression that all women who conceal their heads are Muslim, and this is not always the circumstance, as many women from different religions also cover their heads. Another presumption is that the woman's obligation is to cover her hair by force. This is constructed on the indication that Arab/Muslim women are obliged by their faith to attire headscarves. It should be distinguished that several Arab/Muslim women wear their hijabs willingly. These hypotheses are destructive because they prolong the myth that all Arab/Muslim women are overpowered by their faith and constrained to hijabs. There are a lot of alternatives within the Muslim community, therefore it's fundamental to sustain in mind that this is not accurate for completely Muslim women. It's analytical to be aware of the judgments we create concerning people established just on their appearance if we want to construct a more inclusive society. To evade generalizing about a complete group of individuals based on a few externally obvious features, we should try to understand each person as an individual.
3 The Impact of "Judging a Book by its Cover" To deliver services in a culturally profound method, we must understand the client's culture and how it forms their viewpoint and experiences. Correspondingly being able to work successfully with clients from diverse cultural upbringings, also takes the capability to familiarize one's cultural views. It's fundamental to be conscious of the various presumptions and prejudices that Arab/Muslim Americans may confront in society, the same way we are perceived by others.
