The FBISD Instructional Coach Mission Statement is:
Fort Bend ISD Instructional Coaches exist to
advance the achievement of all students by building teacher capacity to deliver highly effective Tier I instruction.
Describe your coaching philosophy, the role(s) of a campus based instructional coach, and how you would measure your impact as an instructional coach. My coaching philosophy involves with partnering with teacher to improve instruction. In my philosophy I focus on three theme building relationships, building capacity in teachers, and the use of student driven data to coach my teachers. When building relationship, it involves partnering with teacher to improve instruction. This may mean communicating the expectation of the school mission and the goal of the department. My job is to support teacher through the coaching cycles by modeling, observing, and providing feedback on interventions on how to support the students. When building capacity in teachers my role to help teacher implement best practice through implementation of training and monitoring teacher implementation of those practices. The next role is to make sure that I have buy-in from the teachers when moving
forward with a new goal or school mission. Working along side the teacher when reviewing data and having conversation during PLCs about the lesson cycle. My role is to support the teachers when students do not master the concept and as partners find intervention that will support for our struggling students. When using students driven coaching, the teacher, and the coach partner to view all data. Such as students work, teacher observation, and test data to determine what intervention are needed. When the teacher and coach review the data and they may have a different interpretation of the data, the coach can enable mutual understanding through dialogue and use coaching cycle other concerns the teacher may have, whether it is how to transition to next activity or what strategies to use to support student throughout the lesson. To summarize, instructional coaching involves in partnering with teachers to improve classroom instruction. My role is to build relationship with m teachers, so they will buy-in of the change in mission or goal. Building teacher capacity by proving professional development on best practices in the classroom instruction. Monitoring through teacher observation, student data, and providing timely feedback, so the teacher can improve on instruction. When using student driven instruction, it allow the teacher and the coach to collaborate on intervention need to support the students.
PART 2
Select one
of the TEKS/ Standards (from the table on the following page) that aligns to the position you are applying for and determine how you would coach the teacher(s) in the following scenario. Coaching Scenario: A grade level team has identified a need for support in teaching the standard you will select below. The team has varying years of experience and content knowledge and struggles with designing lessons that support students’ understanding of the content. Describe how you would
support the team with designing the learning experience, planning the sequence of instruction, and addressing the misconceptions of the standard you select below.
TEKS B.5A
- describe the stages of the cell cycle, including deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) replication and mitosis, and the importance of the cell cycle to the growth of organisms I would support the team by providing a learning experience that centers around the 5E Lesson Cycle. Teacher must understand that in order investigate science student have to be able to engage, explore and explain the concept to fully grasp understanding of the phenomenon. When planning the sequence of instruction, the teachers must complete the backwards planning. What is it the students need to understand to master the TEKS of the cell cycle. I would the team to create the test by review the TEKS and understanding what the students’ actions is to master the TEK. I would review different activities that will the students to use journal entries when they engage in question of how many cells are in the body? I would follow up with the explore in investing cell size where the students investigating different size of the cell. Have the students to explain what they learn. On the teacher side planning, one must know what the teacher and students are during at this time making sure the students are doing all the critical thinking and problem solving throughout the activity. Teacher would address misconception by aggressive monitoring throughout the lesson providing feedback and intervention at that time in the lesson.
