1. What is the ethical dilemma with this scenario? A: The dilemma in this situation is the two patients. The one is your spouse, and the other is the person they are having the affair with. Both have become an ethical dilemma for you to treat, and both are a ethical dilemma for you to withhold care from. 2. Who would you choose to work on? Explain why? A: I would choose to provide care to the most critical patient. In this scenario that would be the spouse. As the only ALS provider on scene, I would render care until another unit arrived on scene and at that time, I would transfer care. The other patient currently requires a BLS skill to stabilize. As a result, I would have my partner begin caring for the patient. 3. Give a brief summary of what the Hippocratic Oath is.A: An oath of ethics historically taken by physicians. In EMS, the oath is the same. One is to do everything possible to save lives, without doing harm in the process. 4. Define integrity. A: “The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.” 5. Discuss causation and how this is part of EMS. A: The process of bringing about a certain result is referred to as causation. In the field of emergency medical services (EMS), if you violate your responsibility to act, the patient or their family may be able to bring a negligence claim against you. 6. Explain the difference between malfeasance, misfeasance, and nonfeasance. A: Malfeasance is when the act is done on purpose, while misfeasance is when it happens by accident.  Nonfeasance is when someone doesn't act when they should. 7. In legal terms what is the definition of a tort? A: A wrongful act or an infringement of a right (other than under contract) leading to civil legal liability: 8. Define duty to act. A: A legal or moral obligation to prevent harm to another person or the general public.
9. What is the difference between morals and ethics? A: Morality and ethics deal with right and wrong. Ethics are external rules from a society, community, or code. A person's morals are based on their values. 10. How do you handle the situation post-accident? Hire a divorce attorney if needed. In all seriousness, a debrief would certainly be needed and likely the affected provider should be taken off the truck for the remainder of the shift. A debrief should be done, and documentation should be very completed with accurate details
