1.3 Read the following case and then answer the questions. Jenna is a social work intern placed at a local Family Services Agency. Over the course of the last five months, she has worked with Isabela to reunify her with her three children. Isabela (age 28) is the mother of Luciana (age 11), Matteo (age 6), and Angel (age 4). The children were removed to foster care when charges of neglect were substantiated. Matteo and Angel were placed in separate foster homes, and Luciana stayed with Isabela's sister. Isabela's drug addiction compromised her ability to care for her children, who were found to be living in squalid conditions. While the children were in foster care, Isabela entered and completed a drug treatment program, and claims to be “completely drug-free” for over three months. Isabela entered similar programs twice before; this is the first time she completed a program. The children were reunified with their mother one month ago and Isabela appears to be taking good care of her children. In Jenna’s field internship seminar, social work interns were exchanging information about their cases. Another intern, Kim, who is placed in a local junior high school, asked her peers for advice about the group she is running. Taking precautions to change the names and identifying details of the group members, Kim relayed her concerns about the girl she is working with who fears her family will be broken up again. The girl said her mother wasn’t “doin’ the bad drugs anymore, but she smokes pot with her boyfriend in the apartment and was told by her mother “not to say nothing to nobody” if she doesn’t want to split up from her and her younger brothers again. Jenna, the intern working at the Family Services site, suspects that the client being described is the daughter of her client, Isabela. Isabela has adamantly denied any drug use. Jenna herself on occasion smokes marijuana socially and believes that it should be legalized in her state. Jenna has no firsthand evidence to suggest that Isabela is using cannabis or any other drugs. Jenna wonders what to do with this information.  Look over the  NASW Code of Ethics  and post your advice to Jenna. After you post your advice, read the other posts and comment on them. Keep in mind the point of this exercise is for you to become familiar with the Code of Ethics and learn how you can apply it to the case. 1.4 Read the following case and then answer the questions. You are an organizer working with a coalition of local neighborhood groups. You have had great difficulty getting the groups to overcome their turf battles and other parochial interests in order to come together toward the unifying goals of neighborhood improvement, crime reduction, and youth engagement. Attendance at meetings has been low, and leaders have spent
more time arguing with one another than working together. You are surprised and elated, then, to arrive at one coalition meeting to find more than 80 people gathered and enthusiastic to present a new workplan for the coalition. Apparently, leaders from several of the organizations have concluded that recent immigrants in the neighborhoods are to blame for the conditions of housing deterioration and rising crime. They want to work together to form a "neighborhood watch"-style organization that would investigate immigrants’ legal statuses and turn undocumented immigrants over to federal authorities. They also want to stop publishing any neighborhood documents in multiple languages, as "that only encourages them." There appears to be near unanimity about this problem and the proposed solution—the neighborhood leaders have gone through the coalition’s established channels to win support from the grassroots supporters. As the organizer, you are very concerned, though, as this idea and these positions are contrary to your values and your emphasis on the well-being of all area residents. (Adapted from A List of Ethical Dilemmas Facing Social Work by Patrick Gleeson.) Post your response to the following questions and comment on the posts of your classmates: 1. How should you respond at this meeting? 2. How could you use the ethical rules screen NASW Code of Ethics to assist you in ethical your decision-making? 3. Rank order the conflicting ethical principles or standards” 1.5 “Gender is culturally defined. We’ve all heard about the kidnapping of school girls by the Boko Haram but the article by Hilary Matfess suggests that there is more to the situation. Read this article . Then think about its consequences. Suppose one of the girls who was abducted leaves and migrates to the United States. Her name is Abebi. She believes in purdah (the practice of secluding wives) and the subordination of women to men. Abebi feared the violence and witnessed her father and brother murdered. Now awaiting legal status in the United States, you are assigned to work with her. She is 13 years old and does not want to go to school. Abebi hopes to marry soon. She finds it abhorrent to dress as most 13 year olds do in the United States. As a result, she appears oppositional to U.S. cultural expectations and is strong-willed. As her social worker, you know her unwillingness to be educated will be an obstacle to her obtaining legal standing to remain in the United States.
1. What conflicts arise for you in this case? 2. In what ways will the NASW Code of Ethics help you decide how to proceed? 3. In what ways will the NASW Code of Ethics not be helpful in planning how to proceed?”
