1.That are your primary ethical issues after viewing the documentary. Rank from 1 to 3 (1 being the most important to address) the ethical issues for the Boy Scouts of America. - I think there are 3 primary ethical issues after viewing the documentary. Rank number 1 will be failure to protect boy scouts, number 2 will be the lack of transparency of the issue and the last one will be irresponsibility of the BSA accountability. 2. Explain each issue. Who are the primary stakeholders? Who is impacted by this issue. Consider ethical theory for each issue. IN YOUR OPINION which theory best applies to the ethical challenges of the issue. A. Failure to protect boy scouts - The primary stakeholders will be the victims and their families, former scouts, public opinions and BSA - Ethical theory: Utilitarianism and Deontological Ethics. Utilitarianism is based on the consequences, emphasizing the greatest good for the greatest number. While Deontological ethics will focus more on the righteousness of the actions of the consequences. - BSA is a total failure when it comes to protecting young boys from sexual abuse. Their job is not only guiding, teaching but also preventing those from harms. It is against the organization’s fundamental philosophy. B. Lack of transparency - The primary stakeholders will be the victims and their families, former scouts, law enforcement agencies, the justice system, BSA - Ethical theory: Virtual ethics. It emphasizes moral character and integrity. In this case, the lack of transparency in this scandal will go against the honesty and accountability. - BSA was trying to cover up the abuses for a long period of time. They had the “perversion files” details most of the accidents happened within the organization. C. BSA Accountability - The primary stakeholders will be BSA, the public and the justice system. - Ethics theory: social contract theory. It emphasizes the mutual agreement between BSA organization and our society. BSA has failed our trust and belief about the accountability in the organization.
- BSA has tried their best to delay the response and the investigation to all the abuse cases. The lack of leadership in the organization reflects the total failure as a non profit organization. 3. Who bears the greatest responsibility for the 82,209 sex abuse claims? Which stakeholders and why. - The organization’s leadership will bear the greatest responsibility for the 82,209 sex abuse claims. The stakeholders for this includes the top of the organization, former scout leaders. Those who in charge of managing the organization, doing a background check for the leaders has failed to prevent all the sex abuse. They were not capable of taking actions to prevent and correct all the ongoing issues in the organization. 4. Should the BSA organization continue to exist? Why or Why not? - I believe BSA organization should continue to exist. However, they need to reform they operate the organization in order to build trust from community. My cousin used to be a boy scout and I believe it helped him to mature and be a better person. BSA is a great source to promote development in young boys, provide positive change. BSA needs to change a lot in the leadership and culture to make sure the safety of young boys that participate in the organization. 5. Can the Boy Scouts of America rebuild trust with the American people? What steps should be taken in the effort to rebuild? - I believe the BSA can rebuild trust with the American people, but it will take time. At first, the organization must operate with a completely transparency about the activities and their employees. Next, the top leaders of the organization need to be accountable for their leadership that results in the complete failure of the organization. The BSA should implement the background checks, extensive trainings for scout leaders to ensure the qualification of the people who are in charge of boys’ safety. Finally, they need to engage with community to show the commitment to change in a right direction. 6. Are the "Perversion Files" which were released in 2010 a concern for the organization? Why or why not? The perversion files released 1900 names to the public. These were the names of people which concerned the organization at one point or another, but not all were criminally charged.
- The “Perversion Files” which were released in 2020 are a concern for the organization. The files reveal a systemic issue that went under radar in the BSA. The leadership of the BSA has the knowledge about sexual predators within in the organization but they turned a blind eyes. This should be a lesson for the BSA to improve their performance in the future. 7. Should profiling be used when vetting individuals who work with youth? Why or why not? - I think profiling should be used when vetting individuals who work with youths but not be solely relied upon. It is very important to be a part of a comprehensive vetting process for hiring the right people for the job. The BSA should focus on behavior profiling to notice the potential risks from the individual. 8. Working within any institution or organization may not always align with our personal beliefs and values. Do obligations/duties of employment supersede concerns of child abuse? Explain. - Ensuring the safety, well-being and development of youths should be always the top priority with any organization that work with children. The children is the future of our county so we must try to give them best care and attention.
