Development of Teaching- Learning philosophy
Individual differences exist in learning styles, teaching philosophies, and techniques of teaching. In addition to our own learning preferences, we additionally require to be aware of the many learning styles that we could come across in the classroom. Understanding the learning styles of the patient or student is crucial as its needed to tailor a teaching style that best works for
both parties for an effective health teaching or mentoring (Learning styles, 2023). This essay will
address my own learning preferences and learning styles, how these have influenced my teaching
responsibilities as a health care provider, my professional teaching philosophy, how primary learning theories has an impact on my personal teaching- learning values and beliefs and different ways I will be applying the course concepts in professional teaching-learning life. Personal Learning style
“Learning styles group common ways that people learn. Everyone has a mix of learning styles. Some people may find that they have a dominant style of learning, with far less use of the other styles” (Overview of learning styles, 2023).
With the assist of two online assessment tool such as Government of Canada- Job bank and Education planner. Org, I was able to confirm that ‘Visual’ is my personal learning style. I completely agree with that finding as I have always thoroughly learnt contents when there is video or picture that explains the content. According to online learning style assessment tool provided by Government of Canada- Job bank, it was determined that I’m 88% Visual, 50% Tactile and 19% Auditory learner. “You need to see information in a visual format and learn best from written information, diagrams, and pictures”
(
Canada, Job bank 2023) Another assessment tool I used was Education planner.org provided by the public service
of the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA), determined that I’m 45% Visual, 40% Tactile and 15% Auditory learner. As per the tool, “As a visual learner, you are 2

usually neat and clean. You often close your eyes to visualize or remember something, and you will find something to watch if you become bored. You may have difficulty with spoken directions and may be easily distracted by sounds. You are attracted to color and to spoken language (like stories) that is rich in imagery” (What's Your learning style? the results,2023)
When I was completing my practical nursing program I utilized YouTube videos to understand the concepts of Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology well. I believe that the colors, shapes of structures, movement of objects, that is included in the videos or pictures strikes my memory well and assist in recalling the concepts later for exams.
“
Visual leaners are students who like to read, draw and do craft. Visual learners express themselves through creativity” (Getting to know visual learners).
When preparing notes, I prefer to draw pictures, highlight key concepts or try to color code them to better understand the content. I use sticky notes to draw attention towards important information. When I follow this method to study for exams, I remember the answers right away when I read the question and is even able to remember the color of the highlighter used, or the ink with which I drew the picture. When I read, I always close my eyes to visualize and remember the content. Reading out loud the content
was something that I found helpful at my younger ages however I don’t always use this method currently. I do realise that I easily get distracted by clutter and loud noises hence a clutter free and quiet environment is necessary for me to stay focused and retain the information. Development of Teaching- Learning philosophy
“Teachers who perform with a purpose will find themselves more focused, rejuvenated and excited. Through the various highs and lows, a teaching philosophy or “mission statement” helps an educator stay true to one’s core beliefs.” (What is a teaching philosophy statement and why do I need it? 2020) As a health care provider and instructor, I value that each learner is unique in their own way and they enjoy learning process when they are actively involved. In order to best utilize the teaching and learning process, my objective is to ascertain each student's potential and unique learning preferences. Every learner, in my opinion, should have a teacher who is committed to helping them reach their full potential. Theoretical Underpinnings to Teaching -Learning Philosophy “Foundational knowledge of how humans learn, and specifically how a child learns and develops cognitively, is essential for all educators to be their most effective instructors in the classroom. Educational theorists, teachers, and experts believe that learning theories can inform successful approaches for teaching and serve as a foundation for developing lesson plans and curriculum” (5 educational learning theories and how to apply them: UOPX 2023)
“Behaviorism learning theory is the idea that how a student behaves is based on their interaction with their environment. It suggests that behaviors are influenced and learned from external forces rather than internal forces” (Five educational learning theories 2022). Positive reinforcement is a tool that teachers can use in the classroom to help learners understand concepts more fully. The behaviorism hypothesis directly translates into higher retention rates for students who get positive reinforcement (Five educational learning theories 2022).
“Constructivism learning theory is based on the idea that students actually create their own learning based on their previous experiences. Students take what they’re being taught and 4

add it to their previous knowledge and experiences, creating a reality that’s unique to them. This learning theory focuses on learning as an active process, which is personal and individual for each student” (Five educational learning theories 2022). Instructors can apply constructivism to help students comprehend that every day they will bring their own pasts to class. In constructivist
classrooms, teachers take on more of the role of a guide, assisting students in developing their own knowledge and comprehension. Based on their own experiences, they assist them in creating their own world and process. This is essential for assisting a wide range of learners in incorporating their personal experiences into their education (Five educational learning theories 2022).
“Cognitive learning theory looks at the way people think. Mental processes are an important part in understanding how we learn. The cognitive theory understands that learners can
be influenced by both internal and external elements” (Five educational learning theories 2022). Students are influenced by cognitive learning theory because it allows them to better understand how they process. Instructors can offer learners the chance to fail, ask questions, and think freely. With the use of these techniques, students can create more effective learning opportunities
by developing an understanding of how their own mental processes function (Five educational learning theories 2022).
The learning theory that most closely aligns with my professional teaching philosophy of honoring each student's unique experience, involving the learners actively and offer guidance when required is social constructivism.
Some learners have already identified their individual learning styles based on past experiences. Whereas some learners might be still struggling to explore their personal learning styles. However, as an instructor my responsibility is also to guide them to explore their personal learning styles by incorporating various learning activities. 5
Development of Teaching- Learning philosophy
By being open to feedback from students to receive a clear insight on what their expectations are helps me design a teaching plan that is most effective. For example, considering learner’s opinion on whether they prefer watching a video on the topic that they are about to learn or demonstrating the skill first along with explanation is the preferred method of learning rather than reading the contents and asking them to memorize it. Based on learner’s preference, involving activities such as quizzes, debates, and seminars would benefit the learner by not having to memorize the content. “Research shows that students learn better and faster when they work actively in problem solving rather than through route memorization; retention rates also show improvement” (Williams, 2021)
“Constructivism gives students ownership of what they learn, since learning is based on student’s questions and explorations, and often the students have a hand in designing the assessments as well” (Constructivism as a paradigm for teaching and learning - thirteen). One of the advantages of this method is that the learners would improve their social and communication skills as there are group activities such as discussions, debates and seminars included in this method. In this away, learners will value each others opinion and support each other in the learning process. By introducing real life scenarios as examples and hand on activates, the learners could relate to their own real-life experiences. One of the limitations to this method is that all of the learners in a group might not find this beneficial as their learning styles and past experiences vary. Exploring each learner’s preferences takes time and varies for each learner. Since the use of lectures are minimal and mostly includes group or social activities, learners might deviate from the topic so its crucial for the instructor and learners to stay on the topic. Development of Teaching- Learning philosophy
As a health care provider, my values and beliefs influence health teaching and promotion. By creating a teaching philosophy, I would be always guided on my practices and remind myself why I was drawn to this role. As a Registered Practical Nurse working in an internal medicine unit, I work with several patient populations who suffers from diseases such as Diabetes, Congestive Heart Failure, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and several other lifestyle diseases. One of the most common diagnoses that I see on my unit and provide health teaching on is COPD. We do have pamphlets available on the unit on COPD and the inhalers and other medications given to manage respiratory symptoms. I communicate with the patient initially to understand their level of understanding of the topic. My professional teaching philosophy is that I believe each learner is unique and they enjoy learning process when
they are actively involved. Hence, I try to involve patients in the decision-making process when it comes to health teaching. By communicating with the patient, I get an opportunity to learn what works best for each patient as their learning preferences are unique.
“Social constructivism is a sociological theory of knowledge that focuses on how individuals come to construct and apply knowledge in socially mediated contexts. The fundamental premise of this theory is that knowledge is a human construction and that the learner is an active participant in the learning process”
(Thomas et al., 2014). When it comes to health teaching, I usually gather few pictures and pamphlets that’s available on our unit from the educational packages on common diagnoses. Usually patient education packages are in a language that any non-health care person could grasp however each patient’s level of understanding is different. Initially I would ask the patient if they want me to read the information and that would be enough or if they would like to watch an animated video on you tube as some find that method effective. Some patient population such as the elderly doesn’t 7

have access to online resources or lack the knowledge to navigate. Whereas, some young population who have access to online resources might have done their research on their condition
already and as their primary health care provider I have to provide guidance only as needed. For some patients, they do have knowledge about their condition however they require assistance in learning to use an inhaler correctly, side effects to expect, and use of devices such as incentive spirometer. For these types of patients, I explain the indications to use the inhalers, side effects in
a simple language that a non-health care person could understand and also ask them to restate what they understood back to me. I usually demonstrate how to use the inhalers or incentive spirometers first, clarify if they have any questions and ask them to demonstrate the proper way back to me just like how they would explain it to someone who doesn’t know how to use them. This way, they are actively involved and are given an opportunity to think independently. At the
end, I finish the learning process with a very simple quiz on the contents that was taught if they are able to complete it. I will correct the answers that patient got wrong and provide explanation to ensure patients completely understand the necessary information prior to discharge home. For patients who are smokers, providing them with access to community resources is also crucial to help them manage symptoms and adapt a healthy lifestyle.
Application Of Course Concepts
In unit 1, I learnt that Health education is trait of a healthcare professional. As a Registered Practical Nurse, I have the responsibility to integrate teaching into nursing care as it’s
the essence of nursing. Health education will help patients to make informed decisions, learn to identify changes in health conditions and seek assistance when needed. patients will learn self care skills from health teaching. I will continue to apply the concept of initial assessment of the learner as it will guide me in assessing the learner’s readiness to learn, understand their prior 8

knowledge so that I can build upon the existing knowledge.
Initial assessments will erase room for misconceptions and will assist me in individualize teaching. Unit 2 is about the learning theories such as behaviourism, cognitivism and social constructivism that help people learn. Understanding of these learning theories made me aware of different ways people learn, which is crucial to provide effective teaching and identify what makes a learner unique. Through learning activities in unit 2, I got inspiration on designing a learning environment that motivates the learner. I will be able to incorporate ideas drawn from theoretical models such as Health belief model and Transtheoretical model to keep learners motivated.
Unit 3 gave me an opportunity to identify my preferred learning style with help of online learning style assessment tools. 9
