1 Ethics and Professional Studies – Supervision Elizabeth Smith Mid-America Christian University COUN6233: Ethics and Professional Studies Dr. Donna McCoy, Ph.D. December 05, 2023
2 Ethics and Professional Studies – Supervision Clinician supervision, when done correctly, is critical to a flourishing and prosperous future of emerging counselors and therapists and to developing lasting relationships beneficial to all parties involved. A new counselor may have complete knowledge and understanding academically; however, when experiencing real-life situations involving counseling and treatment of others, one needs guided supervision to ensure the integrity of counsel and quality of therapy and treatment are morally and ethically upheld (DeAngelis, T., 2014). Reflecting on my time as a retail manager, changing the floor set each month was not easy, especially not knowing what was expected, coupled with corporate high standards on presentation. During the first few, I was paired with various other store floor set managers to shadow and learn how to read the floor set instructions and marketing techniques when floor space was not available and items needed to be shelved. After six months, I was given the floor set for the next month to execute myself; after a couple of months, I could read, map, and execute the new floor set without supervision. Now, this does not mean I learned it all within the timeframe, no way. Knowledge was gained over the years, traveling to bigger stores and learning how they executed different layouts and accommodated when there was not enough floor space. Each trip was educational and insightful, teaching me marketing techniques for customer engagement. Continued Supervision Continued supervision and continued education go hand in hand; is there a better learning method? In my opinion, NO! It has been my experience that the best method of continued
3 education and growth is continued supervision. Continued supervision is a valuable assessment to maintain and enhance one's professional competence, adhere to ethical standards, and provide quality service to clients. Reflecting on past professions from retail to spa management, special education to real estate, there seems to be a common thread of Continued supervision/education) running through them all, a push for progression, some positive and others not so positive, yet a learning experience. According to the National Association of Social Workers Association of Social Work Boards, NASW, and ASWB Supervision Standard, continued supervision is essential and part of a process in professional development, enabling counselors, therapists, and social workers to enhance their skills, knowledge, and ethical practices (NASW 2013). Continued supervision and education help to improve our skills and guidelines to deliver the best to our clients, help in help holding ethical standards and adhering to legal regulations, aid in resolving ethical deaminase, ensure a solid support team for colleagues, and help in reducing stress for professionals, boosting self-esteem and professional self-confidence. On the flip side, continued supervision and education can be time-consuming and costly for some, depending on your area of focus. Sometimes, depending on your employer, it can cause conflict, leading to a power imbalance and conflict of interest, especially if they are overcontrolling. From a supervisor's perspective as a retail manager, I found that when “progressive training,” training next in line for their elevated position, it was best to make it fun while sticking to policy. Reflecting on my training, the supervisor-trainer was very critical, did not like repetitive questions or actions, basically got the first time, and did not ask again. Let us just say I did not continue my continued supervision or education alongside this individual. I knew from

4 special education that there are many learning methods, as we learn better from some rather than others. I requested another manager to continue my supervision and education, resulting in a favorable outcome. Howard Gardner theorized multiple learning methods: linguistic, logical- mathematical, spatial, visual, body-kinesthetic, music, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalist, and existential (NIU, 2023). Multimodal learning is teaching using more than one method, engaging the mind at the same time incorporating diverse learning experiences and styles collectively covering many methods of learning and understanding without signaling any one person’s inability to learn or understanding based on what most consider “societal norm” learning, verbally, visually or hearing.
