1 Ethics and Professional Studies – Supervision Reflection - Elizabeth Smith Mid-America Christian University COUN6233: Ethics and Professional Studies Dr. Donna McCoy, Ph.D. December 28, 2023
2 Ethics and Professional Studies – Supervision Reflection Supervision boundaries are essential within therapy and counseling, offering a safe, ethical, professional space and relationship between supervisor and supervisee and presenting a professional platform for constructive feedback coupled with a seasoned perspective and knowledge of the supervisor(s). Supervise(s) must be fully competent in recognizing various behavior markers established from years of training that supervisors have acquired. Thus, it is imperative to be open and malleable during supervision. Given the situation, supervision boundaries are not fixed and rigid; they can be dynamic and flexible by design. Establishing and maintaining a healthy relationship with senior advisors and counselors within your profession (Barrett, R. (2021). Supervisor/Supervisee – Continued Education (CE) Supervision and Continued Education (CE) go hand in hand. They are vital to the success of any functioning relationship: management, counseling, cosmetology, real estate, special education, in any profession, and even personal relationships, in my opinion. All require a certain level of acquired skill; no one is born with knowledge. In Proverbs 1:5, we are instructed that hearing increases learning and wisdom and seeks understanding through counsel. The Bible also speaks of the assembly of togetherness in Hebrew 10:35: forsake not the assembling of ourselves together; what this means and says to me is that we should never stop seeking the wisdom of others, not the assembly of the collective (NKJ, 2023. Malleable / Rigid Boundaries Boundaries can be malleable or rigid, differing between therapists and counseling techniques. Boundaries are limits and expectations defined within a professional relationship between two colleges or in a supervisory relationship, helping to ensure ethical, legal, and professional standards are in place and adhered to. Boundaries that are fixed vs. malleable, confidentiality, informed consent, and dual relationships should not be crossed morally or ethically (ACA, 2014. Section F.1.a-11.c, pg. 13-15). Reflection on malleability, boundaries, and counseling, asking, “What would I be willing to adjust for the comfort of a client?’ For example, if a client curses often and finds it stressful to refrain from cursing, then moving the boundaries of cursing during the session would be one consideration in adjusting for the client's benefit concerning how the language is being used. There are many factors to consider when modifying any malleable boundaries. Conclusion Reflecting on the various professions I have performed over the years: motherhood, special education, cosmetology, salon and retail management, and real estate, as terrifying as day one was for each, I am more confident in my abilities today by not having enough to think I know everything. If we continue to learn, we stop growing and learning. For me, to stop growing and learning is to lose connection with society and the world; in a sense, it says I know all I need, and none knows more than God. I strive daily for positive reflection, self-awareness, and growth, seeking knowledge in the hope of gaining a better understanding of negative behavior and its

4 derivatives. Boundaries, CE, and colleagues are like the bumper rails in bowling; they knock us back in line when we have strayed too much, a safety net.
