Report
Doctor Jason Gumma is in emergency medicine, however his journey was not normal. He went to Wayne State University and had an emphasis in education. He wanted to be a teacher but he felt like something was missing because he wanted to help other people and make a difference. He started shadowing doctors, PA’s, and specialists and took the MCAT. Dr. Gumma realized that he wanted to go into osteopathic medicine because his niece had seizures and when he was there, one of the medical specialists was a DO and he could see the holistic point of view that he loved so much. The specialist would ask her about sleep, diet, and just the whole body which makes up the holistic point in medicine. He finally got into MSU COM and during his attending, he was at three hospitals and just rotating through them. It was surprising when he said he actually hated that job but it was understandable since he always had a passion for teaching. He never wanted his life to be like what it was while he was in attending so when all that was over, he went back to teaching. He used his previous connections when he wanted to go into teaching so that he could continue that path. Now, he teaches OST 552 which is about empathy in healthcare, how to talk to patients in a way that they are comfortable, how to deliver bad news, and much more. Not only is he pursuing his passion of teaching, he is still an ER doctor. He picked osteopathic medicine because of the patient-centered approach, the extended set of tools they have been taught like OMM, the integrated unity of all the systems, and the holistic approach. As an emergency doctor, there are many pros and cons. Some pros include that there is a wide diversity of what you see and treat which can make it really exciting since you will not know what to expect. Another pro would include that you would work long hours only a few days a week which means that other days can be used for other passions. However, some of the cons would be that the schedule can be very overwhelming especially since you can not take breaks as it is an emergency unit. Another con would be that there is a lack of continuous care which means that
after the patient is discharged, it is highly unlikely you see them again because they would go to their primary care provider rather than the ER plus you might not be working those days. Overall, the presentation was very informative and it allowed us to get a peek into the life of an emergency doctor who also pursues his other passions and interests. I think this healthy balance is very important as the effects of working in the medical field can be detrimental.
