Dr. Kala Yedavally is a DO who specializes in Family Medicine and it was really interesting because she did not have any slides. This sounds weird but the way she was presenting was interesting. Without slides, it allowed her passion to come through her presentation. It was great to see that she did not give up on her dreams after having her first child. Even though she had to put a pause in her career aspirations and moved to California, she still tried to keep her skills up to date. She did so by becoming a medical director at a metadoze clinic and did urgent care work. She still took care of her child with the help of her husband and when they moved back to Michigan, she continued her education to specialize in Family Medicine and did residency in 2 years. During her residency she became the chief resident and decided to work for their faculty for a long time. When her first child went to college, she decided to take a breather which resulted in her working at Beaumont as the DO director which is where she still works. With all of this, she was always a part time physician. I think she is an inspiration to a lot of people in the room because people do wonder when they want to start a family especially in a field like medicine. A few things I took away from her is that starting a family is based on when your partner and yourself are ready and everything else is secondary. Another thing is that you should always get to know your patient more. She stated that about 90% of the time, you can diagnose a patient just by talking to them and you would not need to order tests like an MRI or a CT scan. Though I am also a visual learner, it was a bit hard to follow her but I can see how passionate she is about her story. You can clearly see she is a people person since she loves to talk and it looks easy to be comfortable with her. I loved her story and it was a great presentation!
