I never had been fond of surgery and I knew it was not the field for me. However, I found it was interesting to talk about it as well as see pictures of it. The orthopedic surgeon talked more about his schedule and what his journey looked like. I appreciated this because it was not boring and he was explaining the things he needs to go through everyday. The surgeon as well as his wife made the mood more uplighting by joking around and encouraging us. My favorite part of the whole lecture was when we were doing case studies. Guessing what could have happened to the patients put us to the test but it was a fun way to be creative. The way that the presenter was speaking kept the audience at the edge of their seats and it allowed us to take a look into what his life is like. I think this presentation was my favorite because it was more audience-oriented. It kept me more attentive, especially the case studies and the pictures of some of the surgeries. He also made 10 commandments of surgery which was fun since he made it up but it was so true of some crucial things that some residents would need to follow. I did not know that to be an orthopedic surgeon, you need to go through a total of 5 years of residency. There was not much that was talked about other than finding fractures and some of the ways that he went about fixing them. Those techniques would include using screws, rods, wires, and much more. An interesting topic that our class went on a tangent of was about private practices and hospitals. In the future, I wanted to open a clinic of my own and I had thought that it would be better to join with the hospital for more resources. However, through this lecture, I realized that it would not be the best idea since there are very specific procedures that the hospital requires which many would not agree with since the circumstances are different for each patient. The whole point is to care for the patient that would benefit them and not doing something that would not make a difference but they still pay for everything.
