Report
MSU’s DO/PhD program is one that I have not heard about before. It was interesting to hear about it today and this program is basically where you go to medical school while doing your graduate school in 8 years. The program was described as a “bridge between the clinical and biomedical sciences” which is something that I have always wanted to do. I wanted to go to medical school first but later get my PhD once I am settled. However, through this program, it would allow me to achieve both at the same time while doing what I love. What interested me more about this program is the timeline of it with the 1st year doing your PhD, the next two years is the beginning of medical school, next three years after that is finishing up your PhD, and then the last 2 years of med school. This allows more time to do research in the gaps as well as applying what you learn through research in medical school and vice versa. A generous plus with this program is that it is fully paid and you get a stipend of $31,000 a year. We also learned how to do case studies and I had done something similar to this before as well. In a three year course at my high school, we did something called paper patients. It was basically where we had to ask our teachers about symptoms and signs while trying to diagnose her as well as find a treatment or prognose. These paper patients would take days long since we would go home and research conditions that the patient could possibly have so that we can ask more questions the following day. These case studies were obviously different since we were given the information and we needed to research the conditions, diagnose, and treatment. The way to do these case studies is to search up words you do not know, find the signs and symptoms in the prompt, focus on a key finding that would help find the condition, and then compare the signs and symptoms with most likely diseases after researching. Case studies have always been something that interests me, especially medically related ones. The combination of research and medicine is something that I want to pursue in the future but as a freshman, it is definitely harder to find research opportunities since school just started. I was in an AP Capstone course in my high school and it was one of the first times I was introduced to research. The first year, we learned the techniques for research and did little research while in the second year, we went to the field and did our own research. As high schoolers, we could not have human subjects so I focused my research upon the effects of Artificial Intelligence in the surgical field in Genesee County. Personally, I am glad that I took this course as it is giving me so much information about these different programs as well as what it means to be an osteopathic doctor plus so much more. Even though the DO/PhD program is highly selective, I am just glad that I had the chance to start now to work towards this goal.
