After reviewing multiple electronic health records (EHR), the three I think would best fit our needs are Epic, Cerner, and Allscripts. Epic EHR offers automated coding assistance that helps coders select appropriate codes based on clinical documentation. Epic also offers integration of coding and billing workflows to streamline the process and reduce the need for a separate system as well as reducing data entry errors and improving efficiency. Epic also stays up to date on billing and coding regulations and guidelines. It also has real-time claims processing, can automatically generate claims, and has a claim scrubber. The downside to the Epic EHR complex and requires it extensive training as well as continued training due to system updates and changes in coding regulations. Due to epic complexity, a significant amount of time and resources will be needed to set our specific workflows to integrate with our current ERH and productivity may temporarily be impacted. Cerner’s ERH offers comprehensive coding functionality, including support for coding systems such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS. It also has features to assist coders in accurately choosing the correct code for medical documentation. Cerner provides a support tool to help coders with complex coding rules and guidelines to ensure accurate coding and reduce errors. It can also alert the users of missing or inconsistent documentation, coding recommendations, and compliance checks. Cerner is also designed to streamline coding workflows, to allow the coder to work more efficiently with the use of templates, and coding shortcuts customizable to individual coders’ preferences. The cons of Cerner’s from a coder’s standpoint are occasionally the system can be slow or even not working; these issues can disrupt productivity. Cerner may also cause a temporary reduction in the workflow as it is being implemented due to the learning curve for most new users. There are also privacy and security concerns so strict security measures must be met to protect patient information from unauthorized access. The last EHR I would recommend is Allscripts. Allscripts offers coding assistance to help coders stay up to date with the latest coding guidelines and regulations. This helps coders stay compliant and report accurate codes based on the clinical documentation provided. Allscripts also has a comprehensive platform for documentation of patient encounters, diagnoses, procedures, and treatment plans which will help coders assign the correct codes. Allscripts also offer reporting and analytic capabilities that can help identify coding trends, and errors, as well as monitor performance. This can help identify areas where coders may need more training. Allscripts also has the capability to integrate with other healthcare systems, with this feature you can minimize manual data entry. The cons of using Allscripts are the complexity of the system may make for a learning curve that can reduce productivity. Allscripts is also known for system issues that may reduce productivity. Allscripts also provides customized coding templates and workflows, however, these customizations can be complex and time-consuming. Since the multiple acquisitions of Allscripts, their support may feel fragmented.
